Nassau, Bahamas Port Q&A

First time to Nassau and wondering if the Queens Staircase, Potrier Bridge, or Atlantis are walkable from the cruise port. Thinking of booking a snorkel excursion but want to see the staircase after and didn't know is that's doable. Thanks for any info!

@Renaenae....The travel advisory for the Bahamas was for the "Over the Hill" area. The travel advisory was issued at a Level 2, "Exercise Increase Caution". Do you know what other countries are listed at level 2? Here's some.... Sweden, Netherlands, UK, UAE,Turks/Caicos, Italy, Anartica😀, France, Denmark and a lot more. When the state department issues advisories, it's seldom for the entire country. Usually areas within a country. So if people stick to the touristy areas and utilize legit vetted transportation they will be safe no matter where they travel to.

it's not that far from the port. a lot of people are going to tell you it's not safe...while sometimes that's true. it mostly isn't. if you're from the USA specifically most cities. you'll find it's not any more dangerous than that.

There are some good videos on YouTube of self guided walking tours in Nassau. Check out The Weekend Cruiser, he has tons of videos on Nassau.

Really not safe to walk around past the port. Queens staircase you should really go with a guide. In top there’s a bunch of little vendors and when we went the guide had to lock the doors of the van with the people who stayed back while the others shopped. He said that they would get robbed So make sure you know the neighborhood well. Atlantis is about 20 mins away. I would t walk there. Take an excursion

not all streets are walkable in Nassau. we printed a walking tour map and set out for the staircase. we met other cruisers along the way and ended up as a group to the staircase. It is beautiful. It is impressive and must be felt in person. We then left our new friends and took off using the walking tour map for other places that we wanted to see until the sky opened up and we returned to the ship soaked and soggy. I can't speak to snorkeling in Nassau.

I don't think it's safe at all to walk to Atlantis. In fact i speak from a personal experience.

Atlantis, absolutely not. It’s on a separate island.

there's some area easy walkable frome the cruise port and other areas, but one note you can see the area in Google maps

We stayed at Atlantis last year. The cruise port is downtown, and we had to take a small taxi boat to get back to Atlantis. We took their city bus from the Poitier Bridge. Didn't get a chance to visit Queens staircase. Perhaps on this visit we will.

I wouldn’t for safety reasons. I love Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park but I would not walk. The hotel is beautiful and has sone sea life. Please take a shuttle or taxi.

We booked the Two Reef Snorkel through the cruise line and it was amazing. It was also very convenient because you don’t even leave the port to get to the snorkel boat.

I am pretty sure you can, last time I was in Nassau Atlantis was under construction.

The travel advisory was issued due to multiple areas of concern…one being gang-related violence, sharks in local waters, and an advisory for tourists not to use ATVs and water vehicles due to subpar maintenance (many of the vendors are unregulated and don’t properly maintain the vehicles). That being said, The Queen’s Staircase is in an area of Nassau experience gang violence. Use caution and don’t wander off alone. You should have time to visit the staircase after your snorkel excursion. It’s a short walk from the cruise port. I hope you enjoy your cruise!

I actually listed the areas in my post that are part of the travel advisory. I never said it was the entire area. Having said that, the advisory specifically mentions tourists being robbed and assaulted. I’d just like everyone to know this, Skooby

Level 2 travel advisory for new providence and Freeport. I may just stay on the ship that day

Answered by Gotapenny on July 12, 2024

...and when the level goes to 3 and 4, it's worth reconsidering travel.

Answered by Skooby on July 12, 2024

I’m pretty sure the US has issued a travel advisory for Nassau

Answered by Renaenae on July 12, 2024

Depends on your definition of walkable… it’d take you a little while longer on foot than getting a transport

Queens Staircase is walkable. There was also a small shopping area close by.
