Interesting little port. Holland America provided us with buses that left the ship & did a tour around the town. We could hop on and off while we were there. You don't need to take the bus. Plenty of people walked to and from town. My recommendation is to visit the Norwegian Rat. It's bar where you can find beer on tap and fresh king crab. Other passengers visited the Russian church but required a taxi to do so since our buses didn't pass by it. I'm not giving this port a full five starts simply to manage expectations. It was lovely for what it is - a small Alaskan island that doesn't get as many tourists as the mainland.

Our excursion was to two tiny museums. Neither the museums nor ship staff regulated the occupancy, and both were so crowded as a result that we had to leave without being able to see even half the exhibits. A distinct opportunity for improvement.

June 19 2024. Westerdam. No transportation provided, the hop on hop off was $50 per person. Cabs were much cheaper. There was a very long line of people waiting for the HOHO. I walked to town along with a couple hundred others. It’s about 2:1/4 miles and mostly paved and level with a couple short uphills. However , aside from a Safeway , two small museums and a church there really isn’t much to see. I walked all over and tried to find a “downtown “ a resident said they don’t have one. Or a Main Street. People are very nice but it was a long walk for not much.

As with other communities we visited, Unalaska is a working town. We docked near commercial vessels- not very glamorous. We'd seen the working towns of Alaska before, so we didn't mind seeing the "real" Alaska. There is a great deal of history to learn in Dutch Harbor. We visited the World War II Visitor Center and the Aleutian Island Museum. Both were very well done. Some passengers did not like the fact that there was limited cell phone service and the town was not "special."
