March 2015 - Norwegian Sun to Caribbean - Western
The cruise ship is moderately big and is well maintained. We entered the ship from dock into deck # 5 and there is no grand lobby or something that you typically see in Disney cruise, to give you that WOW feel. However, the crew is very helpful throughout the cruise and I can tell, they try very hard to make you feel comfortable.
The activities on the ship are very limited (have 2 swimming pools, 2 hot tubs, 1 ping pong table,a shuffle board and a basket ball court. Also, you can practice your golf swing in a cage). Beyond that, not much to talk about for kids' activities. Splash academy where kids can get checked into was so-so and after 1 visit kids in our group did not want to go there. (was not the case with our previous Disney cruise, as they had more fun things to do). I keep comparing to Disney cruise, as that was our first cruise and inevitably, we fell into the trap of comparing NCL with Disney.
Shore excursions: They are pricey with the cruise liner and we did couple with NCL and another couple with outside company (shoreexcursioner.com). There is a significant price difference between the two.
Food: I would rate the food as so-so on this ship. For a 7-night cruise, I am surprised there are only 2 free restaurants and 1 buffet place, and rest all paid restaurants. We did visit one of the paid restaurants (La Cucina) and the taste was average. Ambiance in all the restaurants is good, but the menu is rather limited and visiting the same 2 places over and over got boring real quick. The taste was not great either and I would give a rating of 5 out of 10.
For the price, it is a good cruise and if they can improve the offerings on the menu, this can be a good cruise.
