Norwegian Spirit

November 2016 - Norwegian Spirit to Europe - Eastern Mediterranean

Some glitches; but, good routing

We understand that this was a trial run for Norwegian Cruises.  The routing was good, except maybe Cyprus, which seemed to be a surprise to the islanders, as only a few of the shops and no banks were open.  The big flea market was not open.

The cruise line did offer buses to a central location in town at a couple of cruise stops for $15 each, which we appreciated.

The game that plays with the OBC borders on fraud.  I'm sure they are proud they are able to swindle so many of their customers out of the OBC by using fine print in the booking.  I can see people moving more to booking directly with these games!!

Norwegian Gem

March 2015 - Norwegian Gem to Caribbean - Eastern

A Norway GEM

Loved the eastern Caribbean, great staff (although apparently overloaded with a FULL ship), food was good but becoming lesser in portion, shows were excellent, customer service needs some added training, internet café was good, a better map of the passages by floor is needed (6th has poor inside flow, 12-14th floors are broken up with pools, dead ends are possible).  The continual bombardment with retail sales items is getting out of hand.  Cruise lines need to reduce the influence of their accountants and raise the voice of their customers.

nategranger's Tips

Piraeus (Athens), Greece - Used the hop-on/hop-off bus. Would not recommend driving as streets are crowded and jammed. Parthenon was great; but, plan on walking steps. If you have time, visit the shopping area with street markets, accessible from the hop-on bus. Everything is sold there.
Norwegian Spirit Norwegian Spirit - Window seats during the November - December can be cool. Be careful requesting one unless you are dressed well. In our case the Matre Di at the Windows restaurant had pretty poor customer rapport. We finally began avoiding that restauant after being given the cold shoulder at our requests.
Haifa, Israel - The other trip from Haifa, is to Nazerath, Capernum, Beatitudes and the Sea of Galilee - try an excursion here too. Streets in Nazerath are unmarked and tough to negotiate. Local tour groups can pick you up also and save a few bucks.
Limassol, Cyprus - If the ship is to arrive on Saturday or Sunday, stay aboard and rest - you'll enjoy the next stop refreshed.
Venice, Italy - Venice demands walking or riding a boat - no motorized travel otherwise. The main site here is San Marco and Rialto bridge - worth the visit. If you are using a boat, see if you can request a round trip, if feasible, or a 2-3 card. Glassware from Murano and tapestry from Italy worth looking at.
Katakolon (Olympia), Greece - The museum of archeology is very good. And, the reading material for this excursion does not give credit to the size of the first olympic site. It needs to be visited over 3-4 hours for best effect.
Zadar, Croatia - Enjoyed the sea organ and churches and old town. Farmers market was worth a stop. Too bad the burial chruch for Simeon the apostle was closed.
Tortola, British Virgin Islands - Had not planned on doing much here; but, once off the ship the port had tours of the island for $20 each which turned out to be very nice. Very high hills from which to take pictures. But, no one told us that many shops were closed on Good Friday; so, shopping was not a real possiblity. But, the ship and its drive for sales may have appreciated that!!!
San Juan, Puerto Rico - Fort and brief tour of the capitol building were excellent; but, the town is not much.
New York, New York - Disembaring was a nightmare - again, customer service is lacking research and planning.
Norwegian Gem Norwegian Gem - Dress code for the Great Pacific restaurant is published; but, definitely not enforced. BIG ship with some front to back passage issues (not all floors have inside, direct flow front to back). Captain and crew were great. North Atlantic can be a rough ride!!
