We really enjoyed our three night repositioning cruise from Vancouver to LA! The Emerald was just out of dry dock with new carpet and fresh paint, although some of the furnishings are still showing wear. The food was excellent and the service was superb! The sea days were just what we needed to relax and plan our next cruise! And we win at Bingo so that was a plus! And they still used plastic straws! Another bonus as some drinks don’t lend themselves to “no straw” or “paper straws”.

Ruby Princess

January 2019 - 7 Night Mexican Riviera (Los Angeles Roundtrip) Cruise on Ruby Princess

We loved the Ruby Princess! It is a beautiful ship, with lots of great venues. The entertainment was great and we loved that they had Bingo twice a day on sea days and one evening game on a port day. It was a lot of fun! Great service, great food, great entertainment.

August 2018 - 12 Night Mediterranean Romance (Venice To Barcelona) Cruise on Oosterdam

We loved the Oosterdam! It is a smaller ship but the size was perfect for a Mediterranean cruise since we did so much walking in the ports it was nice to come back to a smaller ship! The food and service were excellent and we really enjoyed the pop-up Sel de Mer restaurant in the Pinnacle Grill.

May 2018 - 4 Night Pacific Coastal Northbound (San Diego To Vancouver) Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

Just finished the repositioning cruise from San Diego to Vancouver and it was excellent! We loved the addition of Billboard Onboard (dueling pianos), Lincoln Center Stage, and the Gallery Bar! The food and service were excellent, as always on a HAL cruise! Our waiter was very accommodating and friendly even though we were only with him four days. He arranged a special request for escargots for two evenings even though it wasn’t on the menu. We had three women in a Neptune Suite and the cabin was superb! And we enjoyed the added amenities provided in the Neptune Lounge for suite guests. And finally, our dinner at the Tamarind was first class! Our favorite dining venue! 🍸

Star Princess

October 2017 - 15 Night Hawaiian Islands (Los Angeles Roundtrip) Cruise on Star Princess

We just returned from the 15 day Hawaiian cruise! It was a wonderful time and overall we really enjoyed our time on the Star Princess. The service was great! We loved all the crew members and loved spending relaxing days in the Sanctuary. But the ship is definitely showing her age and there are several areas that need repairs - including poor paint jobs, torn carpet, inefficient air conditioning, and nicks and dents throughout. The food in the dining room and Sabatinis was excellent, but the upcharge for the Crown Grill was not worth it. The service was poor in the Crown Grill and the ribeye steak was dry and full of gristle. Stick to the dining room! You won’t be disappointed! But overall, we still enjoyed Princess and will sail them again!

Nieuw Amsterdam

April 2017 - 7 Night Alaska Inside Passage (Vancouver Roundtrip) Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

We love the Nieuw Amsterdam! We have taken three cruises on this ship and even though there were 6 years between some of the cruises, the ship is still in excellent condition! Well maintained and beautifully decorated. Our favorite specialty restaurant is the Tamarind. We recommend everyone splurge on this wonderful Asian fusion menu. And it has wonderful views, so go early enough to get a window table and watch the sunset! And if you don't want to pay the extra for dinner (it's only $29), check in on sea days for free lunch! Enjoy!

February 2017 - 10 Night Eastern Caribbean Voyager (Ft. Lauderdale Roundtrip) Cruise on Royal Princess

We loved the Royal Princess! We cruised the Eastern Caribbean in Feb and the ship was beautiful! Even though it is a slightly larger ship than we usually take, it never felt crowded. We spent most of our pool time at the Retreat Pool. It was perfect! Lots of areas to sit in filtered shade. But get there early! Also, we discovered the cabanas, which would have been nice, but they get reserved early so reserve a cabana as soon as you board if that is something you enjoy!

August 2016 - 14 Night European Splendour (Rome To Amsterdam) Cruise on Koningsdam

We live the Koningsdam .... wait .... we love Holland America! We haven't found a ship we don't like and we've cruised on five! We really enjoy sailing on the new ships during their inaugural seasons. This ship is spectacular with the Lincoln Center Stage, BB Kings, and Grand Dutch Cafe! But we didn't like the changes made to the Culinary Arts Center. The new high tables are not very comfortable for watching food demonstrations. But not a deterrent to choosing this ship!

April 2015 - 3 Night West Coast Getaway (Los Angeles Roundtrip) Cruise on Golden Princess

We really enjoyed the Golden Princess. I took my mom on short 3 night cruise for her birthday and originally booked a mini suite as a treat. A few weeks before the cruise I received an offer to upgrade to a full suite - any category - for $150. Since this was a birthday present, I splurged on the upgrade! It was wonderful and well worth it! As suite guests we enjoyed mimosas in Sabatinis every morning. We were treated like royalty. A fun time and great service!

Cruise tips

Sarande, Albania

This is a tourist port in it’s infancy, but we really enjoyed it. We walked along the beach and stopped along the way for local beer.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

We did The Best of Rome tour. It was very interesting but they now make the tour buses park far from the sites so there is a lot of walking. We love Rome, but next time we’ll skip the tours and walk in our own.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Took an excursion to the countryside! It was beautiful. Old Town is very interesting and unique but it was very crowded.

Oosterdam

Oosterdam

Eat lunch in the dining room on embarkation day. It’s less hectic than the buffet.

Ruby Princess

Ruby Princess

Board early and go to the dining room for lunch. You’ll miss the crowds at the buffet.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Very clean and friendly! We enjoyed walking along the water and took an excursion on Princess called “Rare Spirits”. It was a great excursion! It was limited to ten people and we only had eight (2 no shows). We went to a small bar/restaurant, La Lulu, off the beaten path and tasted a little known liquor, Raicilla. The owner was very generous with the tastings and served incredible taquitos and spicy/shredded marlin. And his fresh chips and guacamole were amazing! It was a fun, intimate tour. I highly recommend this tour if you’re looking for an authentic taste of Mexico and a fun time!

Mazatlan, Mexico

We didn’t want to venture far and did not book an excursion, so we took the free shuttle from the ship (which docked at the industrial pier) to the cruise terminal. It was very clean and had some nice shops and opened up into a nice square with shops and bars. We sat in a nice open air table, had wonderful $5 margaritas and excellent chips and salsa. The waiter came around with shots of tequila and got the crowd engaged in a party atmosphere. It was a fun afternoon!

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

We had a fantastic time at Senor Frogs! It was very entertaining and the margaritas were great! We were on the Ruby Princess and the tender process was very efficient. We arrived at 11:15, and since we didn’t have an excursion booked we went to lunch on board and waited until 12:30 to get off the ship. By that time, we no longer needed a tender ticket and could walk directly onto the tenders.

Grand Turk Island

Loved it! We spent the day at Margaritaville. We rented a cabana which worked out well, especially when it rained for a short period. It kept all our things dry!

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

We were very impressed with the Dominican Republic! We took an excursion that included lots of local flare - rum tasting, a traditional Dominican lunch at the botanical gardens, craft fair shopping, fresh coconut milk (incredible how the vendor used a machete to open those coconuts!), and a tour of the fort. Oscar was a great tour guide!

Willemstad, Curacao

Another beautiful port! You can really see the Dutch influence with the colorful buildings. We took a nice overview tour and enjoyed our guide, Misha. But we could have skipped the museum - not much to see here.

Oranjestad, Aruba

Loved this island! We took a catamaran snorkeling tour which was beautiful! We stopped at the Pelican Pier for conch fritters and calamari!

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

Love HMC! We reserved clamshells which provided nice shade in the afternoon. We took the swim with the stingrays excursion which was very interesting. The bar-bq lunch was excellent with hot dogs, hamburgers, fish tacos, short ribs, jerk chicken, and lots of sides and salads. Our only issue was with having to evict squatters from our clamshells when we returned from our excursion and lunch - even though we had left some of our items on the chairs. People just ignored our receipt that was hanging on the clamshell. I’d recommend you bring your own “reserved” sign to place on your chairs if you go.

Kralendijk, Bonaire

We loved Bonaire! We took the aqua sub excursion. It was beautiful going out on the water and snorkeling. The crew was terrific! We started drinking rum punch early and they prepared snacks for us to eat while we cruised. It was nice to go below the waterline in a glass bottom catamaran and see the sea life for those of us who did not want to snorkel.

Koningsdam

Koningsdam

Definitely eat at least one dinner in the Tamarind!

Grand Turk Island

So much fun! We were the only ship in port so there was plenty of room at Margaritaville. We enjoyed our cabana and drinking buckets of beer while standing in the pool! For the most part, we had great weather but we got some rain where the heavens opened up and we had a short downpour. We were happy we had the cabana to escape to, which was just instinct since we were already wet from standing in the pool! LOL. But it did keep our towels and beach bags dry so it was worth it.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

Absolutely beautiful! HAL makes this visit memorable. We had a wonderful day on the beach and took a short excursion to swim with the stingrays. Then we had a delicious bar-b-q lunch with jerk chicken, fish tacos, hamburgers, grilled hot dogs, and of course, beer! We reserved clamshells which worked out great because we wanted some shade when we returned from lunch. But we did have to evict “squatters” from our clamshells when we returned. I’d recommend bringing your own “reserved” sign to place on your clamshell and lounge chair if you plan to leave it for any time. Some people are clueless and actually moved our items from our chairs to use them, saying they didn’t know the clamshells/chairs were reserved.

Venice, Italy

Venice is a fascinating city! It is like stepping back in time! Five years ago we booked the pre-cruise package through Holland America that included three hotel nights, a walking tour of the city, and a day trip to the countryside to visit two authentic 16th century vineyards! Everything was wonderful! I highly recommend visiting the Doges Palace and taking time to enjoy a cocktail in St Mark’s square. Then find a pizzeria along the canal and swing for the upcharge to get a table by the water. We found the people to be very helpful and friendly. We loved it so much that we’re going back in Aug 2018! I can’t wait! We’ve booked the pre-cruise package again through HAL but it’s different this time. It includes 2 hotel nights and a luxury canal cruise ending with cocktails and appetizers at the Duchess’ Palace. Based on our previous experience, I know HAL will do everything first class!

Lahaina, Maui

Maui was our favorite Hawaiian port! So much to do here, one day is never enough! But we made the most of it and rented a car. We took a beautiful drive along the northern coast and went to Mamas Fish House for a light lunch. Although very expensive, you can’t beat the view and the beach! We spent the afternoon on the gorgeous beach and saw a huge sea turtle make his way down the beach to the waves only a few feet from us. A wonderful day!

San Francisco, California

We enjoyed San Fran, there is a lot to do! The Hop on Hop off bus tour was so-so. It was a little boring and long as we had decided to do the full loop first and then get off at a few stops. And the bus was hot. But we got off at Pier 39 and had excellent hot griddle crab!

Catalina Island, California

Even though we decided not to get off the ship in Catalina, we had an awesome experience with A Taste of Catalina. We had pre- purchased tickets for their Happy Hour Walking Tour, but when we could not make it to the tour due to illness, they understood and provided a full refund even though they usually cannot do “same day cancellation” refunds. That is incredible customer service and we can’t wait to return to Catalina to try their tour!

Monterey, California

Had a little trouble finding public transportation from the Old Fisherman’s Wharf to Cannery Row. The shuttle only runs in the summer so it stopped running on Labor Day. But once we located a cab, he was great, affordable, and came back to pick us up later. We went to a Taste if Monterey at Cannery Row. It was wonderful with wine flights and great small plates. Loved their baked Brie! Very nice!

Santa Barbara, California

We enjoyed a wonderful “back country” wine tasting with Cloud Climbers Jeep Tours! Excellent! Lots of wine, great husband and wife team driving two jeeps, and just a fun adventure all around!

Celebrity Infinity

Celebrity Infinity

Spend time at the martini bar! The “flare” bartenders are awesome!

Catalina Island, California

We couldn’t make our excursion through A Taste of Catalina, but they were awesome! I sent a note in the morning letting them know we could not make the tour due to illness, and they were awesome! Even though they normally do not make “same day” refunds, they made an exception and refunded our tour. Incredible customer service and I assured them I would spread the word! I’m sorry I couldn’t make their “Happy Hour Tour” but I guarantee the next time I’m in Catalina, I won’t miss it!

Monterey, California

This was a tender port and it was nice that the tender took us directly to the pier at the Old Fishermans Wharf. Lots of cute shops and incredible ocean front restaurants. We took a taxi to Cannery Row and spent a few hours tasting flights of wine and eating baked Brie at a Taste of Monterey. A very nice day.

Santa Barbara, California

We did the back country wine tasting with Cloud Climber Jeep Tours. Excellent tour and wine! It was fun riding in the open air jeep, although it was a little challenging getting in and out of the jeep but that was part of the adventure.

Alesund, Norway

Alesund was beautiful! We did a city tour and learned a lot about the city and how they rebuilt after a turn of the century fire. Very picturesque! And we had time after our tour to walk around town. We were fortunate to be in town during their Taste of Alesund festival. It was like a street fair and we stopped for a beer and bought some cheese from one of the vendors. Excellent! People were very nice and loved talking to us about our cruise and where we were traveling from.

Bergen, Norway

We loved Bergen! So much history along the waterfront. We didn't do an excursion but ventured out by ourselves in the pouring rain! But we had boots, ponchos, and umbrellas! It was quite an adventure in the rain, but still a lot of fun. We learned from a shop owner that Bergen is the rainiest city in Norway, so for other cruisers, be prepared for the rain. It's a great port and all the shops are prepared with umbrella holders located by the door. And once back on the Koningsdam, we enjoyed hot pea soup in the Grand Dutch Cafe! Perfect choice on a rainy day! ☔️

Newcastle Upon Tyne, England

We booked an excursion through Holland America out to Alnwick Castle! Spectacular! It's hard to imagine that the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland still live here in the off season! It has been in his family for 700 years! Incredible. It has been used as a movie set for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey! It was wonderful to walk the grounds and take a tour through the magnificent rooms! The only disappointing part of the tour is that you are not allowed to take photographs inside the castle and the docents were very strict about that, so I had to download pictures of the interior from the Internet to put in my photo album. But overall, it was an enjoyable day with beautiful weather!

Ketchikan, Alaska

We had so much fun in Ketchikan! We took a crab boat and crab feast excursion at George Inlet Lodge that was excellent! The boat tour was beautiful and we saw lots of wildlife - eagles, bears, seals, and crabs! When they say "all you can eat crab", they weren't kidding. Hot, juicy, succulent crab kept coming! We had fun with the table competition to see who could create the largest crab shell tower in the center of their table! After our crab feast, we took a stroll through Creek Street Red Light District. A great way to experience how life was during the gold rush. A wonderful port full of history.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Awesome city! We arrived three days before our cruise departed and had a great time! We stayed at the Movenpick Hotel which is connected to the cruise terminal so easy walking to checkin for the cruise! We loved the canal cruise and the day trip we took out to the windmills. We used Viator for that trip and it was a great way to experience the Dutch country - windmills, wooden shoes, cheese & wine! But I would skip the Heineken Experience unless you are young, love techno music, can walk a lot of stairs, like self guided tours, and only like one kind of beer. We wondered why there were soooo many young (I mean really young) teenagers there and then we found out that the drinking age for beer is only 16. Don't get me wrong, I love young people, but we definitely didn't fit in! 🍺

Key West, Florida

We loved Key West! We visited Sloppy Joe's and had a great time! Good music and good food. The Hop on Hop off bus was a great way to see the town and we got to see a lot of the sights. Also enjoyed the Maritime Museum.

Princess Cays (Cruise Line Private Island)

Totally relaxing day at Princess Cay! Definitely reserve a clamshell since there is very little shade. It is such a reasonable price and provides a nice "home base" for the day. My only negative is that they only stayed until 3:00 and the bar closed even earlier than that at 1:30!

Skagway, Alaska

We took the ship's White Pass Summit Railway excursion to the Yukon. It was a great day! A wonderful way to appreciate the early gold rush pioneers who tackled this harsh environment. The train ride was so much fun and the scenery spectacular! Even the bus ride back to town was great as we stopped to enjoy the Yukon, covered in snow! The only reason I only gave 4 stars is the bar-b-q lunch was just average. And when we returned to town we had time to grab a beer at the famous Red Onion Saloon and Brothel. That was fun! But don't forget to tip the "ladies" if you take a photo with them!

Juneau, Alaska

The float plane flight to the Taku Lodge was well worth the cost! The flight was beautiful. Seeing the glaciers from the air lets you see how vast they are. And when we arrived at the remote, rustic lodge, we were greeted with the aroma of grilling salmon on an outside fire! Mouthwatering! It was a great way to enjoy some Alaskan history and really appreciate the early pioneers and how difficult it was to live in this harsh environment.
