Serenade of the Seas

July 2017 - Serenade of the Seas to Europe - Northern Europe

Norwegian Jewel

November 2016 - Norwegian Jewel to Panama Canal, Central America

Excellent Panama Canal Experience

The ship and friendly staff were excellent.  We had wonderful weather, lots of sun and calm seas.  The ship was a nice "size" and never felt overly crowded.  Shore excursions booked through NCL were very good considering some of the ports have limited sites to see.  The food was consistently good.  Teppanyaki is always full of fun, and Moderno's was a new experience for us with excellent food.  Fourteen days passed quickly and the six at-sea days were full on things to do.

Most of the evening entertainment was excellent, but not to impressed with the MoTown on the last night.  The captain was excellent and provided more news and info for the passengers than on any other cruise we have been.  An excellent cruise experience.

Norwegian Epic

February 2016 - Norwegian Epic to Europe - Western Europe

Cruise on the NCL Epic

Excellent cruise itinerary.  NCL's Free Style cruising is very good.  Flexible dining options and casual as you choose.  The Epic is a very large ship more like a floating hotel than a grand ocean liner.  It has no open sundeck that circles the ship.  The design is more cut up, but that helps disperse the 4000+ passengers and makes it feel less crowded.  The stateroom was excellent.  Service staff is good and food is good but not "exceptional".  Overall a very good package.

latitude4738's Tips

Riga, Latvia - Unfortunately the wind was so strong the captain could not get the ship into the narrow channel to dock. Dissappointing as this was one reason for choosing this cruise itinerary.
Stockholm, Sweden - Impressive city. Beautiful layout among the islands. Don't miss the Vasa museum.
Tallinn, Estonia - Interesting country and an excellent look at post-soviet life and progress. Especially if you have a good guide who is open about the before and after soviet rule.
St. Petersburg, Russian Federation - Fascinating! History overload. The opulence of the Czars was beyond belief. Be prepared for the crowds as tourism is exploding and logistics can be trying. A good guide makes all the difference. We did a full 3 day excursion package to see as much as possible and where very pleased with our time in St. Petersburg and a taste of Russia.
Fredericia, Denmark - We didn't book an excursion as the town is small and easy walking. Enjoyed a free day to explore on our own. Very pretty town and interesting old fortifications to stroll along.
Copenhagen, Denmark - Been there before but took a walk and cruise excursion where we saw a lot of new areas and an excellent guide to inform us. A big city with many beautiful areas.
Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany - Common port call to access Berlin but we had been to Berlin before so we opted for the Molli train excursion. Beautiful countryside and visited the Baltic resort areas. Very good experience.
Klaipeda, Lithuania - Took an excursion out on the peninsula to see the county side. Again, another interesting post-Soviet culture. And an excellent guide.
Serenade of the Seas Serenade of the Seas - The Serenade was an excellent ship for this itinerary as we were in ports and on shore excursions nearly every day. If you were on a long cruise with may sea days the ship might start to seem limiting. But again, we did enjoy the layout of the ship. Decks 5 & 12 allowed you to walk continuously around the ship and even go out on the bow. Stairs were conveniently located and the elevators were abundant enough to handle the crowds.
Panama Canal Transit - It was great to have them open the bow for the best view of the canal locks and all the activity. It was a nice touch for the crew to set up drinks and snack on the bow also. It can get really crowded if your trying to take photos.
Malaga, Spain - The Alhambra is interesting but not near as "grand" as I expected.
Norwegian Epic Norwegian Epic - The NCL Epic is a very large ship, more like a floating hotel than a stylish ocean liner. No grand open areas, more cut up in many separate public areas, but that helped break up the fact that there are over 4000 passengers on board. It has no open sundeck that circles the ship.
