July 2014 - Carnival Fascination to Caribbean - Bahamas
Compared to other cruises we've done on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival this cruise was just ok. The ship is in good condition and we found the crew attentive and friendly. The entertainment in the main theatre and the comedy clubs were some of the best we have ever experienced. The food was very good and our wait staff very attentive. Our fellow cruisers were decidedly "casual" and "fun loving", most being from South Georgia, Alabama and North Florida.
For the "Fun Ships" there was not a lot of fun things to do on the ship at day in ports or while sailing. Most everything was geared towards trying to sell you something. There was no live band out by the pool during the day or on sailaway. What ever happened to the corny entertainments like hairy chest, leg, bellyflop contests by the pool on sailing days. We got the feeling that the cruise director and staff didn't want to get involved with that kind of stuff. Daytime trivia games were not competitive with teams, but just some pads of trivia questions you answered on your own with answers on the back.
Freeport is, as the comedian said, "the Detroit of the Bahamas". They could easily skip that port and go to the private island instead. Nassau is Nassau but a lot more fun than Freeport. We suggest that there be more shady spots on the decks to get out of the sun. The pool and upper decks are very exposed. Even the Serenity area (which we enjoyed) had very little escape from the sun except for an alcove which became very hot because breezes can't get in there.
Overall, if you wish to get a quick getaway at a good price do this cruise once. That's all you'll ever need again!
