April 2017 - Koningsdam to Transatlantic

Fabulous Cruise

This was an outstanding cruise...leisurely across the Atlantic with only 3 ports during the 1st 14 days & 10 ports during the 2nd 14 days.  Charming walled old towns in Dubrovnik, Croatia; Budva and Kotor, Montenegro.  Ancient ruins in Greek ports.  My favorite was the 4th Cent. BC amphitheater at Epidaurus, a shore excursion from Nafplion.  Rome was my favorite city...so much to see.

The ship had excellent singers and dancers and a marvelous classical piano quintet.  Waiters and stewards were very friendly and accommodating.  Food was creatively presented but not always hot when it arrived at the table. The interior cabins were shockingly smaller than on HAL's older ships, but had a very large shower.

November 2016 - Eurodam to Caribbean

The wonderful vacation cruise on the Eurodam

It was all great but I guess I would have to say that the highlight for me was the stop at Cadiz and the tour of Seville. We took the $100 tour provided by American Airlines to Seville and we were on the same red and white buses that the passengers taking the $200 tour offered by Holland - America. Our tour guide was superb and she was exceptionally knowledgeable about Spanish history; we tipped her well.

June 2016 - Maasdam to Alaska

Great Alaska Cruise

This was a fantastic cruise.  Our agent selected the perfect outside cabin for us on Deck 4 near the front elevators.  The ship moved very smoothly; we couldn't tell when we docked at ports or shoved off.  The staff and crew were great.  Service was outstanding.  Meals were delicious, introducing us to new foods, and were presented artistically.  Floral arrangements around the ship were beautiful; the flowers always appeared as if just picked.  All ports of call were interesting.  I can't say anything about the excursions because we didn't take any.  We were quite lucky with the weather...it was warm and sunny in every port.  The only complaints I heard from anyone was that the clothes we packed for cold, wet weather were not needed.  It took me 37 years to get my husband on a cruise; it took less than 24 hrs for him to like it!  Thanks, Angela Dawson.

judy8259's Tips

Naples, Italy - Pompeii was a pleasant surprise to me...not as much left for imagination as I expected. Large rounded cobblestone streets were not easy to walk on but most places there were narrow smooth sidewalks.
Mykonos, Greece - Walk through the narrow streets to the right of the pier to see the 4 windmills and the townhouses on the water with balconies over the water.
Rhodes, Greece - Be careful at Lindos Acropolis where there are no railings on the stairs. It's a long downhill walk from the tour bus parking lot to the town.
Dubrovnik, Croatia - Old town is very interesting. If you don't take a tour, know that yrs ago residents learned from disasters in other cities: walls are limestone (don't burn), there are no balconies on main street where residents take refuge during earthquakes and all streets slope to the sea for drainage.
Santorini, Greece - From tender pier take the local tour boat to Oia for blue domes as seen on travel posters, then bus to Thira (included). Walk down with the donkeys to tenders, ride a donkey, or wait in a long line for cable car.
Nafplion (Nauplion), Greece - Be sure to visit Epidaurus, the best preserved amphitheater in the world. It dates from 4th Century BC. Is still used today without amplification.
Malaga, Spain - See Roman amphitheater not far from bus stop in town.
Koningsdam Koningsdam - Be sure to get a delicious giant cream puff at the Grand Dutch Cafe..they're complimentary. Food at Explorations Cafe is also complimentary.
Funchal, Madeira - Don't miss the smallest principality in the world from the 15th century to 1909 which is located less than a mile from where we docked.
Cruise Hubbard Glacier - Glacier actively calving. Captain got fairly close to give us a good view of Hubbard and several other glaciers nearby. It was a bright sunny day so the tall mountains were visible (an unusual sight).
Kodiak, Alaska - Visited the lovely Russian Orthodox Church and had an informative conversation with the priest who was glad to share his knowledge of the church.
Victoria, British Columbia - Quaint city with British flavor; many speedy harbor taxis zipping around. We were disappointed that the city charges $10 for round trip bus between ship and downtown. We enjoyed walking through the James Bay neighborhood and conversing with some of the residents.
Seattle, Washington - Wow, we finally got to see Mt Rainier on our 3rd visit which was a sunny day.
Seward (Anchorage), Alaska - The $20 trolley ride went through residential areas and the guide pointed out results of the devastating 1964 earthquake.
Maasdam Maasdam - Check the daily schedule. There is so much going on you will have to choose which activities to participate in. Listen to announcements so as not to miss something of interest.
