MSC Seaside

December 2017 - MSC Seaside to Caribbean - Eastern

overall summary of inaugural cruise

I wanted to say a little about MSC Seaside. I don't like reviews, mainly I don't trust them, I figure if all reviews are bad, it must be bad, but if 20% are bad then that's what I'm looking for you just can't please everyone. That was my 38th cruise (3rd on MSC) and it would be near the top of my list with some allowances for it being the first "real cruise" it did a transatlantic and then we had the inaugural cruise out of Miami. It has a lot of work needed on organization, signs, notifications and procedures. It is just so new and it seemed like 70% guests were not American, which I like because it makes travel interesting. Most guests were always speaking some other language? I remember when we booked Carnival Sunshine inaugural cruise in Italy, it was cancelled because of construction delays ran more than 2 months, then when we re-booked 6 months later, it was still having serious problems in all areas. Back to Seaside: Food (main dining room) was great, a few unusual items on the menu were not so great but overall still great. The buffets: one on deck 16 and one on deck 8 were somewhat small and not a great variety, still very good, some times they were a bit crowded. Off hours snacks were somewhat limited but we always had something available and the open times were clearly listed for all services. The specialty snack locations were very good with all kinds of specialty drinks and snacks (better and more abundant than we had seen on other ships). Milk shakes, gelato, specialty coffee drinks, etc. they also have a chocolate factory restaurant. Overall food is great. Service: dining room was excellent, food delivery was very slow? I'm thinking there were issues with organization in the kitchen? Cabin Steward service was very good, very responsive to our requests (we always have lots of requests: slippers, robes, ice twice a day, etc.). Bar service (nonalcoholic) was very slow everywhere. We did have a problem with no electrical outlets operating: so I have to say the Guest Services were very lacking! We complained 4 times, 3 phone calls and 1 visit to Guest Services and finally the cabin steward found the breaker. It took 2 days to get our safe open, again another Guest Service problem - they need to work on this (just new ship?). Things seemed to begin to get better toward the end of the cruise and we saw some procedural changes that helped, but still have some growing pains. To me MSC is an international cruise company similar to Holland American and the guests are mostly from some other country which makes it a bit different. Though Holland America is mostly for us old folks, MSC does cater the young with a lot of activities, and parties. We don't do luxury cruises, but MSC is close, I would rate MSC Seaside better than MSC Divina. Cruise companies we have been on: I would rate Disney #1, MSC tied with Holland America at #2, Princes #3, Carnival #4. It has been a long time since we have sailed NCL and RCL but both were very good, and we haven't been on a Mega Ship yet so I can't compare them? Seaside is a great cruise ship with a few minor improvements needed (just getting some good routines working). If you want a luxury ship, you will have to pay a lot more.

fun time

great cruise, medium size ship, food was good to ok, had to call for ice in our stateroom twice, overall ship was very clean and well kept, all crew were friendly and helpful, ship rides very well in rough waters, not the easiest to go from ship end to end, several floors have no through passage

Carnival Valor Carnival Valor - remember where you park, the ship may not dock same location, made it a little confusing.
