Wi Fi Calling on Cruise Ship

My iPhone is set to make phone calls over wi-fi. My ship has wi-fi and I will have an account. Is there any reason to think that I wont be able to make a phone call to anywhere while the ship is out at sea? Thx

Good question.  Would double check with the cruise line and your carrier.  Wouldn't want to end up with a cellphone bill that cost more than the cruise.

We've learned our lesson about cell calling on cruise ships.  Check for the specifics on the line you are traveling and your cell carrier.... and do not be terribly surprised if you get a variety of responses.

My son does it all the time on our Princess cruises on his Iphone.  In fact, he has shown several people how to set it up.  His business requires him to stay in touch. You must set it up properly for it to work.

I keep mine on airplane mode unless I am in a port where I know I have cell service.

Yep .. airplane mode for me too. One of the great things about a cruise is that I can unplug. I am off the grid and unreachable  ....... ahhh .. pass that drink over please

I turn out cellular data, and that allows me to still be able to use wifi... Someone I was getting texts from my brother, which I didn't think twice about, and when I just got my bill, $5 for international texting fees... Also some calls came through... but I knew not to pick those up.....

More on this. There is a feature in settings on iPhone "Setup phone for Wi-Fi Calling" - you need to see if your carrier supports this (there is a list online) - Verizon does. If you put phone in airplane mode - you CANNOT make any phone calls at all regardless of any other settings. If you turn airplane mode off, have phone setup for WiFi calling, and it finds a WiFi network - your call will go through. I will try this out and report.

Sure! I'll also have him write it down so I can post.  I watched him set it up on several people's phones but can't remember... We have AT&T by the way.

Directions:

Prior to going on the cruise download the google talk application for sending text messages and phone calls.

You just go to wifi settings turn it on/ find princess name.

Then under internet.princess.com

Once connected, use the google talk app to make a phone call using the internet
