When is the best time to buy your flight???

DH and I are flying in to our port.  We cruise from May 12 to May 19.  Trying to figure out when would be the best time to get our tickets for our flight price-wise.  We are planning on flying in the night before we sail as well.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Some time between 2:00 and 3:00 pm would be my guess. Yummy      It's as good a time as any.

I would say 3 - 4 months prior to sailing.

As soon as possible... at least that's what we do. But I find BAK1061's answer funny and maybe accurate.

We book our flights as soon as we book our cruise, which is 10-12 months in advance.

I'd like to change my answer.  After some deliberation, I believe the best time to call for airline tickets is around 3:30 am, eastern time.  Your phone call will come during a slow time, and the ticket agents will be trying to fight boredom and sleep.  Your conversation will be a welcome one.  You might even get a free meal if you're nice.

Well in that case my DH will have to call because at 3:30 am ET which is where I live, I am sleeping myself.  Very intuitive consideration though. LOL

Thanks for all of your suggestions!  One more question.. What search engines do you use to check the best prices on flights?

Call the airline directly.  Here's why.  Airlines overbook.  If you call one of the engines, there are no guarantees or refunds.  There was a story on Yahoo just yesterday about a woman who booked a hotel room with Expedia.  Her reservation was cancelled due to overbooking. She had to jump through hoops to get her money back (search for the story ).     On the rare occasion we fly, I pay the extra fee to talk to a rep.

We also book directly through the airline. One time we booked a flight with Expedia, which had a connecting couple of flights - we were travelling from western Canada to Florida. When I tried to do the online check in 24 hrs before the flight there was a problem, and talking to 3 different call centre people at Expedia didn't help. None could figure out why I couldn't do the check in. We arrived at the airport really early to sort it out and were told that the flight Expedia had us booked on, had ceased to exist a year earlier and we would now have to reschedule all 3 flights. It was spring break, flights were full so it was a mess trying to sort out. it worked out in the end, but Expedia was no help to us at all and we have never booked anything with them since that day.

Agree with others! Book through the Airline.  I have heard too many horror stories.  When it works, it works great.  When it fails it fails spectacularly!
