So sorry to hear this, I was thinking about a river cruise. But if this is the customer service after being promised something makes me rethink it. Thanks for sharing your story.

Hi Bubba.  We’ve been on five river cruises so far (with other companies, but we’d like to try Viking) and we’ve seen many instances of simply amazing customer service.  The reviewer even says, “The cruise was excellent in every other way and we would have given it 5 stars,” so I wouldn’t rule out river cruising all together.  This situation really sounds like an incredible disconnect between the company and the ship itself.

There  seems to be a disconnect in the review and the cruise line. What I do not understand here, is that the cruise line seemed to promise something that there was no way to deliver on. There are designated smoking areas on ships and I'm guessing that some of the same rules apply on river cruises. How the terms of the alleged contract could be followed escapes me, as dealing with the public always has its trials. How will it be enforced?

There seems to be questions just hanging out there.

That sounds like Viking, for sure. In July, my friend and I took the Cities of Light Tour on Viking Odin. There were many problems that were never addressed. And Viking customer (dis)service never even had the courtesy to respond to my complaints. I'll post a review of my own trip on this forum as well.

Thanks, I will not rule them out. I'll just do my homework.

I have been on over 50 Cruises.  Some of them were river cruises. All the cruises had problems with smokers smoking where they shouldn't. If it was up to the captain to establish the smoking areas, that's what you should have been told.  Perhaps your experience will force Viking to state their smoking policy uniformly over all their boats and ships.  I understand that they read these posts on our Website.  I hope that they reply here. I am a non smoker and do not want to smell smoke in all the public areas.  Luckily I am not allergic to smoke.  Thanks for posting.

We are closely tracking river cruise reviews because we were considering giving one a try.  We cannot tolerate smoke for health reasons too.  This is disappointing and will make us think long and hard before ever booking on Viking. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I hope that Viking does read your review.   I know that in Europe smoking is done all over the place. Europe is not as anti-smoking as the USA is.   But if your ships are catering to Americans they should be comfortable for Americans.

Viking should have lived up to your printed agreement.

Thank you for your review,  it will make me think twice before booking a Viking Cruise.

It appears that Viking is pretty much a non-smoking line. Here is their advertised policy:

"All Viking ship interiors, staterooms and verandas are nonsmoking; this policy also applies to e-cigarettes. Each ship has an outdoor smoking area, generally on the Sun Deck."

However, and unfortunately, enforcement is a major factor which sometimes appears lax on some lines. Actually though, all the majors do a pretty good job of regulating such, in my opinion, even those lines who have cut off balcony smoking in the last year or so, much to the dissatisfaction and chagrin of their hard core smoking clientele.

The worst of the worst of the big boys today is HAL, which is becoming infamous as the "ASHTRAYS OF THE SEAS".
