St. Thomas excursion

Going on the Magic to St. Thomas and need to know if I am better off just taking a taxi from the port to Magen's bay and then going to shop after or booking an excursion through Carnival. We are in port from 11am-7pm, going at the end of May. It's been about 13 years since I have been to St. Thomas and never on a cruise.

We just left St Thomas about 36 hours ago. We didn't go over to Magens Bay this trip but it seemed like half the ship did. There were seven large ships in port that day. That was quite a few as they put ashore about 25,000 guests.  Folks on the adjacent balcony did the Bay.

Besides two or three ship's shore excursions which included Magens Bay, there were hundreds of cabs, etc. available. It takes about 30 minutes one way by cab to get there. Ship excursions are about three times as much although you get to do other stuff like sightseeing besides time on the beach. You didn't say if you were porting in Havensight (WICO) or Crown Bay. About $8.00 pp from WICO or $12.00 pp from Crown Bay, one way.

I have no clue where the ship will port and I am trying to locate a schedule. We are paying $44.99 pp to go from the ship to Magen's bay for 2 hrs and then to the downtown shopping area for 2 hrs and then back to the ship. I have not been to any beaches in St. Thomas because we always stayed in Tortola so am not really sure if this would be a good choice. We basically want a swimmable beach for kids but I also don't want to be shoulder to shoulder with other people on the beach. I guess I just need to know if I am better off getting a taxi to take us to a beach and then another to take us to downtown for the shopping. Is that a better option than doing a carnival sponsored excursion?

That's about the same price for a shore excursion, which includes Magen's Bay, as on Princess, the line we are on right now, Regal Princess. I'm probably not a good one to ask because we don't ever go the cab route or do the independent excursions. I would take the cruise line shore excursion but I'm sure you would save bucks if you went independent.

We took the tour from in town on the Yellow Bus. The driver and guide is a local fireman and gave a good tour. He was very knowledgeable and a careful driver.

I have been to Magen's Bay a bit of time ago. It is very calm waters, beautiful sands and still got burned with the overcast skies. We opted to just get our own cab and go to the beach. It was a fun ride, but scary at the same time (Just because of the small windy roads). I enjoyed it!

We took taxi to airport - got a rental car and toured the entire island - Cab fare was $10 - car was $47.  Remember they drive on the left so if that is an issue - avoid a rental car.  Scope out rental car prices before you go but way cheaper by airport...Cabbies charge per person so if a group, send one person off to get the car and come back to the pier for the group.

Aside from numerous beaches, we went back to OFF THE GRID inland - best BBQ in the world - bring bottle of sauce packaged in rum bottle back!!!

Choice of vehicles - Car in St. Thomas; Golf Cart in Bonaire; Jeeps or 4 wheel drive in Aruba.
