Should Cruise Ships Have Lifeguards?

Disney is the first cruise line to put lifeguards at their pools. Should other cruise lines follow suit? What do you think? Might Carnival want to do the same?

No wonder you are not fond of pools.Surprised

I hang with those who believe it pretty much a wasted operating expense for most lines to hire life guards. Maybe Disney, with their heavy emphasis on children, but for us, most of our cruising involves voyages where very few kids are on board. When there are young kids, responsible adults have always been close at hand and keeping an eye on them. As far as no pools, I don't buy into that at all. There are way too many elders on board that must get their exercise in a pool because they can't work out very well in the typical gym. As for me, I like the work out facilities and never use the pool, however hot tubs are another story. Another point, life guards are not an absolute guarantee that a kid won't get hurt. Sometimes it results in false security. The only time I ever witnessed a fatal in a swim pool was when I was about 11 years old, my bother and I were in a hotel swimming pool with life guards. All of a sudden, two life guards started blowing whistles and telling everybody to clear the pool as they began diving. After a few minutes, they brought up a dead lad, about my age.

It would be wiser to un-install the pools rather than hire lifeguards.

I am not in favor of either.

If these are the only two choices, then either way the lines will get a huge financial hit -- either from the lawsuits or the lack of ticket sales.

Holding parents responsible is the only intelligent choice.

I understand the concept of lifeguards. I think banning all kids from cruising is a better idea.

BAK1061 just nailed it.

Just so everyone knows, the only people that think cruise lines should hire lifeguards, are attorneys$$that are$$prepared $$to represent$$$all the$$parents$$$of the kids that$$$ get hurt$$$ ( or worse ). Oh, and if you think that being out at sea, or sailing under a Panamanian flag will protect the cruise line, it won't. Their offices are here, and their ports are here. They are publicly held companies trading on US exchanges.

I was wondering where it went. No big deal.

Sorry BAK. I flagged one of your post scrolling though this thread..

I already knew what your opinion is on this topic and we all know that thete is a very good chance the Carnival could be follow suit on the this.

It's only going to make this deck crowded with unruly, unsupervised kids.

This will backfire the next time someone gets hurt, or worse.

Once you hire lifeguards, you are assuming responsibility for the safety of everyone in the pool. It allows passengers to pass blame onto someone else, instead of accepting their own parental obligations. YOU watch YOUR kids. Plain and simple.
