Shore excursions

What type of excursions do you like to do on shore? Do you prefer active ones like horse back riding or snorkling, beach trips, city tours or shopping, etc...?Happy

For us it depends on the port itself. If it's a beach type port (like Cozumel), we tend to go on our own to a beach or do an excursion. If it's a port like one's in the U.K; we like to do "Hop on, Hop off" type excursions so we can see as much as we can. We have also combined both options by doing a short excursion that runs 3 or so hours and then do a bit of touring on our own near the port.

I agree it depends on the port itself and also if I have been to the port before.   If it is my first visit I like some or the city tours to get an over view of the port.   If I have been before then I have a better idea what I want to do and if Im comfortable to do them on my own or if I'd rather do them with a excursion.  Transportation is also a factor,  how close is transportation to the port.

It depends on the region we are cruising.

Our European adventure last spring was definitely a cultural tour focus.

For the Caribbean, we were always beach bums until last year.  Hubby is partially paralyzed which significantly affects our choices... but doesn't eliminate beach time entirely.

Our Hawaii and SoPac trip is going to be a combination of both.  We just booked two private tours; one we have a private car driver and the other we went with a 31' cabin cruiser w/a guide/driver.  This allows us time to do what we want and not to feel rushed by fellow cruisers frantic to get the best beach chair or seat on the boat.  We may end up paying more, but we are extremely excited about these bookings.  While traveling around HI ports, we booked cultural trips that include a progressive meal/home tour on the Big Island and a movie set/location tour on Kauai. Since I lived on Oahu growing up, we are going to rent a car that day.

I am not a big shopper, but do like to pick up scarves made locally wherever I roam. They are usually easy to find and make great gifts... that's about as much shopping as I can stand.

As long as I have a lot of picture-taking opportunities, I'm happy.

We tend to follow the same philosophy.

i think that this is a good way to do excursions.  Thanks for replying.

Yes, although I usually like the city tour, on some trips we choose something else.  Since I live on the beach, I rarely choose beach options.  However, I did chose to stay overnight in one of those bungalows over the water in the South Pacific just because I always wanted that experience.  I hope it doesn't rain.
