Shipmate App - group communications

We coordinate a large group cruise everyother year.   I've been looking for an efficient way to communicate with everyone in the group.   Do i understand the Shipmate App correctly that you can add "friends" and send messages?   If that's correct, can you do group messages, or only one to one?

Finally, we cruise NCL with this group.   Will using the App on-board use up internet minutes or will it result in using cell phone data plans at sea ($$$$$).   I know NCL has a messenger function (iConcierge) but you have to pay for it and as far as I know it won't do Group broadcasts.

Any help will be appreciated.   If it can be used on the ship I'll tell everyone to install it!

Thanks

Bob

How big a group are you looking at?

Hi rstackjd,

Currently, private chat is only offered between two users. Groups can use the general roll call chat feature, but it is public and might not be the best option for your group.

Hope that helps answer your question.

Hi Bob, welcome to Cruiseline.com and Ship Mate app!

Individual messaging works great, but I’ve never seen an option for group messaging.  That would be an awesome feature – I hope they’re working on it!  If everyone in your group joins the roll call, you can communicate with them all using the Roll Call Chat.  That’s not private though – others on the ship who have joined the roll call will see it as well.

While many of the Ship Mate features are available offline, you do need to be on WiFi or have a cell signal to communicate with others.  This may not be a deal-breaker though.  With internet packages becoming more reliable and less expensive many (most?) cruisers get some type of connection.  By the time your group cruises in 2019, unlimited WiFi may be very reasonable.

Keep us posted on your trip!  Happy Cruising!
