Do we need cash or can we use our debit card? Or any advice about the best money cards to purchase? What is the best way to get and purchase pictures taken during the cruise? If your anniversary is during the cruise do they give you a free gift or do you have to go through a travel agency?

Great question.

You'll need to open an account for your cruise on board expenses. To do this log into your cruise manager on Carnivals web site. Money cards will be accepted but fore warning is that on ship using money cards/gift cards the the gift card company automatically reads it with 15% gratuity.

When you board, you will be issued a Sail and Sign card which is the only type if payment accepted on board

Carnival gift cards work great for adding money to your Sail and Sign account.

ctav did a great job at answering part of your question. It is unlikely you will get a free gift but if you have indicted you are celebrating your anniversary on your boarding documents you might get a small cake and a  song from the dining room wait staff.  If you went through a TA to book your cruise, they might arrange something else for you.  All photos will be charged to your sail and sign card unless you pre-purchase one of the photo packages: found on your "manage my cruise" page that you should do before you leave home in order to get your luggage tags, boarding pass and boarding times.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cruising! Big Smile

On board, nothing is done via cash or cc. Everything is done via your cabin card. It is your identification while on ship and is also your money. Everything is placed on an account that you can either prepay with cash or credit or let it run using a credit card. Be careful though as the account must be settled before leaving the ship.

Right on AP.. Carnival must be notified some how or other so as to recognize any special occasion.

We got a free bottle of champainge at the Carnival Legend steakehouse.  We just told the waitress we were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary.  Got a cake at the diner the next nite.  We think that was pretty cool

Most cruise lines seem to be moving away from using cash while onboard.  Your cabin key will be tied to your credit card that you used to book the cruise with.  You can use the cabin key to make onboard purchases and have it charged to your credit card account.  This includes packages used to take pictures during the cruise.

Let them know that your anniversary is during the cruise and they will make special preparations for your event (supposedly).  I celebrated my 13th birthday on a cruise once and they forgot about it (despite being reminded several times in front of me by my parents) so I never got my cake!  However, I've seen other people celebrate birthdays and anniversaries onboard the ship and they've gotten cake and Champaign!
