Sea Sick Child

My 11 year old (then 9) was sea sick almost the entire time on our cruise. I started giving him the Dramamine 3 days before our cruise as instructed and I continued throughout the cruise but nothing helped. Please give me suggestions on what I can do or buy, get prescribed etc. So he can enjoy our next cruise in 2 months. Thank you in advance.

I would talk to your doctor and see what he/she suggests.  Let them know that the Dramamine did nothing to help.  I don't know if the Transderm Scop patch can be prescribed for a child, but you might ask about that.

Crew members often recommend green apples after symptoms have started.  Crystallized ginger and sea bands

are other things that work well for people.

Bonine works well for me.

You may want to take some Ginger candy,  it is known to help with sea sickness.   If you have a local China Town you can get the good stuff.

I agree with GrandmaJo about talking with your doctor, especially since the Dramamine didn’t work last time. For myself, I pack Bonine because it is non drowsy, and I also have ginger Gravol which is non drowsy too, and a natural product.

Hopefully he will not be so sick this time.

I'm so sorry he had motion sickness for the whole cruise, he must have been bummed. Scopalamine is contraindicated in the young child (those under 12), unfortunately they are more susceptible to the adverse side effects of the med at that age. I've never tried the OTC meds recommended, but you may ask your pediatrician about meclizine, it may be helpful...

Good luck on your next cruise, I hope you are all able to enjoy yourselves.

Thank you for that advice. The doctor called in the Dramamine 25 mg for him yesterday. I'm hoping this helps.

Ok. Thank you. All and any advice is much helpful. I won't him to be able to enjoy his cruise this time.

Thank you and where can I find the Ginger Gravol?

Thank you. That's actually what his doctor prescribed, the meclizine (25mg) and not Dremamine which I stated earlier. I'm hoping this helps him too.

Walmart usually carries it, or any pharmacy. It’s with the Bonine.
