Royal to roll out a new class of ships

This popped up on my FB feed. It may be a ways away, but a new class of ships with innovative fuel technology to curve greenhouse emissions. Still sounds like a mega ship too at 5000 passengers.

I know its more of an advancement with fuel technology and eco friendly ships, but the devils advocate in me says, they are more mega ships, which will reduce the opportunity for ports... Will cruise lines produce small ships anymore with the roll out of the mega ships???

Hopefully not. Like you said the ports are limited for the mega ships.

So many cruise ships, so little time!

Some ports have expanded to accommodate larger ships and others are working on it – often with assistance from the cruise lines. The business model of the major mass-market cruise lines doesn’t leave much room for them to return to smaller ships. That’s part of the reason why, at a corporate level, they all have sister lines that offer a smaller ship experience. I think there are ships and itineraries for everyone!

I'll stick to the non-mega ships. I have no interest to go on a mega ship where I have to pre-book dining and shows.

Way too big.

Part of the vacation experience for me is to be able to decide at the last minute to do something, not having to make reservations months in advance.

I heard they are working on a ship so large, they intend to petition the U.S. to make it the 51st state. Big Smile

It looks like mega ships is the trend. The economy of scale, I guess. Ports will enlarge to accommodate them.

With the cruise in January 2018, the ship is as much a destination as the cruise.

Although, after that cruise we will return to smaller ships.

The oasis class ships are a beaut!

At 5,000 passengers, we will never see this class either.
