If it is a storm hitting New York that is on a N/S course (like most hurricanes) the waters in Fla might be rough. With the winter E/W storms, not so much.

It all depends.  Lived in SC for a decade.  Often tropical depressions/storms/hurricanes seem to suck all the bad weather along with them leaving great weather in their wake.   I cruised right after Hurricane Matthew skirted up the coast in October.  We flew past it while it was approaching Jacksonville and embarked the next day.  Weather was great and seas were calm while the poor folks in NC got inundated with rain.  By the time a weather system is as far North as NY/NJ weather in the Caribbean is more likely to be a result of other systems and fronts in the local area.  My profile picture was taken as we left port that day.  Departure was delayed to give people more time in lieu of travel delays and we got a beautiful sunset as a bonus.

At least you know that you are on a ship when it rocks.

I enjoy the rocking especially when I'm sitting and relaxing or falling asleep.  Here in the SF Bay Area we have spring storms passing through and it looks like my departure on the Princess Grand this Saturday will be a bit rocky.  I'm looking forward to it!!!

Thanks was on our first cruise in years and was on the Sea Princess. And the waves were incredible we had my mother in law and in the pool and the water dropped from 7 feet down to about 12 inches as it swooshed up and down and went it moved the other way the water went right over us. ( I told my mother in law that it was for fun) she loved it. But they closed it down about 30 min. After we got out. Lol. Another time I was on a cruise and down on the 3rd floor behind the scenes and my wife and our children were on the top deck tanning and we had a 45 degree turn with things flying all over the the place. As I always said things happen!!
