I would go to the website for your foreign affairs, external affairs and state department for warnings about Roatan. There have been reports about crime in the area, I would be cautious..Also, I would look up the security chief on board and get the low down on the area. I may be over cautious, but better safe than sorry.

Bubba54,

Are you sailing to Isla Roatan (the main port), Coxen Hole or Mahogany Bay?

Simon, my itenerary only says Island of Roatan. I am on the Emerald Princess. Last time I was there we were tendered in and I did not leave the little, dock area. I am assuming it will be the main port as they do not indicate a tender will be required.

We don't have a lot of Roatan reviews (http://cruiseline.com/port/panama-canal-central-america/roatan-isla-roatan-bay-islands-honduras/reviews, but it seems like zip lining is a good option, and I've heard many positive reviews of the the dolphin excursions at Anthony's Key Resort (bookable through the cruise line). Beach and snorkeling are other options.

Let us know what you decide to do and be sure to review the port in your cruise review when you return!

We were just in Roatan and really enjoyed it. We docked at Mahogany Bay, and there is an area at the dock where you can hire a taxi. We hired one for the day, and once our driver knew what we were interested in (photography and wildlife) he took us to the iguana farm and a small zoo where we were able to interact with monkeys, parrots, and take lots of photos. Then he took us to East End where we had a nice lunch at the beach and a little shopping. When you get to the taxi stand they will explain the island and make suggestions on what to do. We felt very safe and enjoyed it immensely-much more than the other islands that were madhouses of shopping and traffic!

I was just in Isla Roatan, Carnival Glory 1/7/15, docked at Mahogany Bay(Private Area for Cruise  only), i think Carnival only dock, Coxen hole other Port, I took private tour of island and all seemed well and did not see or hear of crime. As with all other countries in the area security is always prevalent. I felt safe, but venturing on your own could always lead to something or maybe not. felt there was a strong police presence. At all tourist areas. I would go back!!!! Beautiful Island!!!!
