Preparing your home before you cruise

When going away, it's not just your suitcase the needs filling. What preparations do you make at home before you depart on a cruise (or any vacation for that matter)?

  • House sitter
  • Pet care
  • Making it look like someone is actually there
  • Mail pick up
  • Heat, water, and other utilities

Just a few ideas to get the topic rolling.

Those are the items that we do when we are going out of town as well. Just a couple more items that we do:

  • clean out the fridge of perishable items
  • garbage run
  • load and calibrate the 50 cal machine guns to ignore the dogs in the yard, but to mow down intruders including, but not limited to walkers or politicians

Arrange for someone to take care of our cats.

Clean out the fridge

In the winter, make sure the thermostat is turned down to 65 (cats gotta stay warm while we are gone LOL)  In warmer weather, make sure the thermostat is up to 75.

Turn off answering machine so we don't come home to a ton of messages.  Everyone who would really need me knows where I am and how to contact in an emergency.

Clean the house--in the case of our untimely demise on the cruise, I don't want to go into eternity hearing my Mom saying "Just look at this mess".

We are pretty lucky as we have a single adult son that lives in the same city and he is willing to come and house sit and dog sit for us while we are away. He gets the benefit of using our laundry facilities which are preferable to the laundry mat. The only thing that we do is pre measure the dog food putting each meal into a zip lock and the rest is taken care of.

Ask my neighbor to take care of the cat.

We have a couple of things we make sure we do before we go:

  • Get someone to take care of our dogs. Thankfully our neighbor across the street loves dogs. They have 2 labs that play with our Golden and American Eskimo.
  • CLEAN. I hate coming home to a messy house or something out of place.
  • Adjust thermostat. No use cooling/heating the house with no one in it. We leave it enough to keep the puppies comfy.
  • Program our lights. We have a Lutron system in our home that remembers every turn on/turn off of every light in the house. When we have vacation mode on, it mimics the same patters to make it look like someone is home. It's pretty cool!
