NCL cancels cruise

The GEM was supposed to leave NY tomorrow.  Technical (mechanical) issues have caused the cancellation of that cruise.  I feel bad for those who were booked and looking forward to this trip. I believe everyone was flown to NY from the Caribbean as she could no longer safely sail.  Hopefully she will only be out of commission for one week.

I read that too.  What a serious downer.  But it does sound like NCL is trying to do the right thing for those effected.  It's amazing to me that there are not more technical issues with these ships as they run constantly with very short breaks every few years in dry dock.

Yeah .. quite a few news articles on it

Ouch .. feel bad for those that were hoping to sail on next cancelled cruise

The saga continues for those unable to fly back..an estimated 90-100 folks. NCL secured 10 cabins on a Royal Caribbean ship schedule to dock in Barbados on Monday Nov 13, 2017 and will arrive in Ft. Laud Nov 16, 2017. Amtrak back to NYC from there. All rooms now filled, with NCL looking for additional passage for remaining passengers.

It is always sad when thing like this happen.

How disappointing :(

At least they are safe and they didn't get stuck somewhere out in the middle of the sea. However, that's so disappointing.

It is unfortunate but these things will happen ... and it is not like there is a repair shop on every corner. I am sure parts and knowledge for these repairs is not an easy thing either. Fortunately things like this do not happen too often

Agreed, nothing the cruise lines want to happen. The nightmare of having to take care of everyone on the cruise to get them home and put them up. I think would be a logistical pain in the .....

I love how the people whose cruise was interrupted are complaining.  They feel Norwegian ripped them off knowing there was a propulsion issue.  But if NCL had cancelled their cruise, they would not have received ANY compensation.  Yes, they were inconvenienced, but it comes at a huge cost to NCL.  Hotels and flights home will cost Norwegian a lot of money.  If anyone gambled and lost here, it was Norwegian.  They gambled the ship could handle one last voyage before repairs, and they lost.

Now, even if you have cruise interruption insurance, you won’t get back NCL’s costs, but you may be eligible for other costs to yourself. For instance, if you have to fly somewhere other than NY.  If you didn’t take any insurance, you’re S-O-L.

So, at least everyone got what ? Half a vacation ?  Better than being home, and, you have a story to tell forever.

I found this:

Norwegian released a statement saying:

"Due to a technical malfunction with the ship's Azipod propulsion system that has resulted in the ship's speed being restricted from full capacity, Norwegian Gem's current 11-day Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed New York on October 31 will now conclude in Barbados on Saturday, November 11. Norwegian has arranged for flights to return all guests to New York and hotel arrangements for guests who returned home today.

"Norwegian Cruise Line sincerely apologizes for this unexpected change to the ship's scheduled itinerary. As a gesture of our appreciation for their patience, all guests will receive a future cruise credit of 25% of their cruise fare paid.

"In order to ensure the azipod's technical issue is resolved, Norwegian Cruise Line will be cancelling Norwegian Gem's cruise scheduled to depart from New York on November 11. All guests booked on that sailing will receive a full refund, plus a 50% future cruise credit of their cruise fare paid. The company will also cover any airfare change fees of up to $300 per person for those guests who purchased air independently. Norwegian's reservations teams and travel partners will be working closely to rebook guests on alternate sailings over the same dates, and is currently offering a limited time Flash Sale that offers guests all four free amenities in the popular Free At Sea promotion, including free unlimited open bar, a free specialty dining package, $50 towards shore excursions in each port per stateroom, and 250 minutes of free WiFi. On select sailings, Norwegian's Friends & Family Sail Free offer also allows the third and fourth guests to sail for free on many 2017 and 2018 sail dates."

surprised they they are only offering 25% off a future cruise to those that were on board.  Very generous to those of the cancelled cruise though.
