The list could be extensive...and I'd bet real money that the cruise lines, each and every one, know and count on it. If suddenly everyone somehow became an educated consumer, the fares to cruise would skyrocket. I'll start with one of my favorites...buying excursions and specialty restaurants on board, rather than on line, in comfort. Watching folks do it onboard, surrounded by 500+ of your closest new friends who know as little as you do with basically only cruise excursion desk literature to go on, leaves me totally disgusted....no research, no opines from peeps who've actually done a particular excursion, is like throwing your $$ into the ocean...

I agree about NCL Star, I loved that ship too! It's smaller and doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but I thought it was a really special ship. I sailed her for a week in the eastern Med.

Hard to explain why one ship amongst many more or less similar leaves that impression. that's the way we feel about NCL SPIRIT...sailed her our first two cruises..hard to believe how long ago that was. and she was originally built for an oriental cruise line. been on RCCL, CARNY, now exclusively NCL for years..approaching Platinum Plus (if we live)...finally on a mega ship, this past NOV and promptly booked beaucoup more on BREAKAWAY and her sister GETAWAY, into 2021. leaving 2/7 out of NO...and yet, if the SPIRIT came back to a port we were willing to schlepp to, I'd book her in a heartbeat.

Have to agree ... absolutely love NCL Spirit

the "free drinks" package from NCL isn't really free...you have to pay the 18% service charge online before or with your final payment due which is about $252 for a one week cruise for two people. it's a great bargain if you're not in love with your liver--if you are a light-weight like us even a "free package" is NOT worth $252 so perspective...

We sailed Spirit out of New Orleans. Maybe it will get back there some day.

We have prepaid gratuities too. Happy

The biggest cruise mistake we made (and we made MANY):

Not packing or preparing for getting sick. I now travel with an assortment of medications for all sorts of ailments. It was probably just a case of bronchitis, but the cost of Dayquil onboard was EXTORTION!

The second biggest cruise mistake:

Booking everything onboard (excursions and all). And not booking any private tours with private companies. Depending on the location, booking private tours can not only be more affordable. But often times the group is less crowded, and often times just as safe/reliable.

We always book in advance from home when we have the time to research and choose whether it be through the cruise line or private.

This has been some amazingly good stuff. Thanks, guys! I feel like I'm getting involved in less of a vacation and more of a nomadic lifestyle. Awesome!

Lineups. Being overwhelmed or over zealous. Slow down, enjoy your vacation. Lineups are part of cruising.
