Following this thread! Hope you get answers as I am interested in learning about these areas.

Would like some information here as well.

I'm in the planning stages for a trip to New Zealand now and I'm very interested in this thread.

Having never been there, my research is limited to what I can find on the web, so any personal stories would be helpful.

So far, I've decided the hop on hop off bus is the way to go in Auckland. Explorer bus has a day pass and I think it includes a ferry ride to Davenport.

I'm also looking forward to Tauranga. I really want to raft the Tutea falls, but I haven't found a suitable tour to handle all of the logistics yet.

Lots of people rave about Rotorua and Mount Maunganui at this port as well.

Are you going on a cruise or a land adventure? Have lots of Kiwi and Aussie buddies here in Alaska that can help if you are a back packer type. Been down there on a number of cruises and two on land tours on COSMOS. We hope to get on an excellent cruise in November 2020, which begins north of Australia starting in Tahiti and then heading east to FLL, with Bora Bora, Easter Island, around Pitcairn and much more, 35 days. Sort of difficult to answer your question. I can give you a lot of suggestions from just a drifters standpoint and lots of ideas for shore excursions on the cruise lines haunts.
