Island Princess is okay (and just okay)

Hi I'm back.  Island Princess was okay.  Another cruiser I met on the ship agreed with me that she certainly will not be the first choice for my next Princess cruise.  The lack of public areas was certainly a factor.

The workers did a good job but they weren't a happy staff like I saw on the Grand.

Might be because we all had two nights of no sleep, the crew was certainly effected by what we went through.  Very strong winds and high seas.  Not a cloud in the sky but the seas got to be hills for over two days.  My room steward had to take one day off sick and the guy that replaced her was in bad shape too.  We had high winds that got up to force 10 one day.  We had to skip Astoria because of the weather.  Even some of the veteran cruisers said the sea was horrible.  Worst I've seen so far.  But in a way I enjoyed it since it was something different to experience.

The gym, yikes, I hated it so much I only went three times.  The last visit was abbreviated.  Outdated terrible equipment, depressing dark brown room thrown in at back center of ship, and just a bad vibe in there.  One guy in there said it wasn't even worthy of being called a gym.  Grand Princess is an older ship and has good equipment.  Why can't Princess get all the ship's gyms up to speed?  They certainly have the cash.

The main thing that made the cruise enjoyable was the great people I met.  Lots of Canadians, god I love Canadians!!!  They all make the Western Hemisphere a better place.  Oh and I had a Coffee Crisp in Canada which aren't sold in California.  I LOVE those candy bars.

I'll do a full review later.

Sorry to hear things weren't better ...As a longtime Princess cruiser, it strikes me as bad that my last Princess cruise was as subpar as this cruise sounds. What is going on?  You know how many Princess ships / cruises I've been on in a year, so it really surprises me and hope this isn't a trend...

We too had rough seas on the Pacific last month so I guess that can't be avoided this time of year.  If it helps, you didn't miss much in Astoria ... our stop there was met with a lot of locals who DO NOT like cruise ships disrupting their quiet little town...

I agree about Canadians ... nicest people I meet on ships (and here!

Welcome back, and thanks for the mini review Happy

I went to Astoria once and didn't really do anything.  Also the two locations we were going to visit for the shore excursion were places I'd been before.  The cancellation was fine with me.  Princess of course gives a full refund.

Interesting about the protesters.  I have sometimes wondered about that.  I know it happens and am surprised it doesn't happen more often.

The Grand Princess, the oldest of the Grand Class ships, was great when I was on it in March.  I'm seriously thinking about doing Alaska on her in September, 2017.  Great up beat crew and great passengers.

Also talked to different people on Island Princess that said they'd been on the Regal and the Royal and they were very happy with them.  So I'm thinking (and hoping!!!) it isn't a trend.

I was on the Royal Princess last month, and had absolutely no complaints about the crew. The crew shortage (or cutback) was evident in the final product delivered, however I cannot blame that on the crew themselves.

I think it may be more of a fluke than a trend.

Having only been on the Regal and Island, I felt a comparison would not be fair.  The Regal was new and large and beautiful when we sailed on her.  I did not expect the Island to be as grand...and it wasn't.  The Island was just the vehicle getting us through the Canal.  I did not even look at the gym, so I could not give you any information there.  My DH would have really loved the high seas, me not so much.

Welcome, home!

Welcome home! Thanks for posting your review, and especially for saying you like us....Canadians Big Smile. You can't get Coffee Crisp in the US? I didn't know that. If I travel to California, I'll be sure to let you know, to see if it's near you, and I'll bring you some .

These sound decadent!  You could make lots of friends on a cruise with them. Of course he's right about "youse guys"!

Thanks for the mimi review, I find it sad. The Island used to be such a beautiful ship. I have not been on her since the major renovation to add cabins. No one I have spoken with that has sailed since will not again. I just hope they leave the Coral alone.

Coffee Crisp is one of my favorites. I loved Astoria when we went there on the Island Princess on our Panama Cruise. they were most welcoming, and we had a wonderful day.

If you need some send me a note thru Simon.
