We have never had a balance owing of over $30 on our cruises. We don't buy beverages, gamble or make many purchases. Each cruise we've had enough onboard credit to cover almost everything we want - couple of photos and perhaps something from the shops. We purchase souvenirs for our grandkids with cash in the ports, and prebook all excursions prior to the cruise. Love getting off the ship knowing we have no credit card bill.

Same here.  Sometimes we even get money back if the on board credit is refundable.

I like to have over 400 prepaid on my sail card and an extra 300 in my pocket...

I think this is a good amount to have for your trip.  Thanks for posting the specific amount which the article did not do.  It is a helpful guide to those new to cruising.

We all have our personal "budgets " for vacations so I hope and newbies realize there is no set - spend whatever you are comfortable with.

Some cruises are very expensive for us.... I have a birthday cruise coming in December and I hope to find the "perfect" gift.Wink  It just might cost my DH a lot.  then again we have been on cruises where our only expenses are gratuities and wine with dinner. We budget about $500 per cruise and rarely go over that. The $500 includes gratuities (even if prepaid) and any onboard credit.

I keep track on what I spent on the privous cruise and see where I spent money that wasn't necessary. What works for one person cruising may not work for me.

Valid point.  This is also a good guideline for repeat cruisers, but not much help for first timers. I have spent more for "silly" items the last two cruises than the previous ten combined. So your common sense plan wouldn't have worked for me.  Maybe I'm just becoming reckless.Big Smile
