My best tip is mentioned in the article:  use for onboard account.  When it's gone, it's gone and we have to make a conscious decision to add more money or not.

Helps immensely with impulse buying.

I gift myself ahead of time and add money to my Onboard Account with a cc I get bonus points for.

Very good tips.  We usually buy the "vineyards" package on Carnival.  We like wine at dinner and it ends up coasting less per bottle and therefore saves money.  We tried the drink package last cruise and found that the cruise line made about $130 on us.  So for us it is not cost effective, but for others a very good deal. Make a budget and check your bill daily to see how much you are spending is most wise (I agree this is easier of you put cash on your account).  Be aware of the holds on your account when using a debit card.

I meant to say use cash for onboard account.  Stupid work--won't let me concentrate on getting my posts right Surprised

It gets easier to save the more we cruise.  We realize what we don't need. Like, shirts from every port.   Oooh, new thread........

We have a budget that we stick to, and we have a great time. On the ship always have a little OBC to spend, and once we didn't  even use it up. We buy souvenirs in the ports for our grandchildren but that's about the extent of our spending. Our photos that we take are our souvenirs? We don't gamble or drink alcohol, DH brings his preferred sodas on board, and I stick with the iced tea and lemonade.

I have never done this.  Maybe i should consider this......

You can purchase the onboard credits in a variety of amounts using any credit or debit card you want (not just the one on file) so it's really a good deal!

When cruise line permits, we each bring a bottle in our carry-on on Embarkation day.

I will carry one a bottle of red,  I don't drink soda or specialty coffee so no spending on those items.   I just think before I spend but will admit I have the attitude of I'm on Vacation,  I can watch budget when I'm home.   I also do not mind an inside cabin on  7 night and shorter cruises so that saves a bunch.
