Have You Ever Received a Free Upgrade?

It seems that free upgrades are a thing of the past.  Now passengers get calls offering discounted upgrades.  Have you gotten one for free and were you happy with the upgrade?  The only upgrade that I get offered are discounted ones?  What has been your experience?

The best we ever received was on NCL Star a few years ago, inside to a balcony. I do believe that will never happen again. Recently we received an inside to an ocean view.

Those are great upgrades - lucky you.

How does one ever come about getting a free upgrade?

NOPE... Never, nada

We hear about this phantom beast, the complimentary upgrade. We expect it would be a thrilling event to have personal experience with one but have about as much hope of that as in finding a unicorn.

If we knew we would all be getting them. I think sometimes if a ship isn't full they will upgrade those high up on the number of cruises sailed with that cruise line. Mostly, you pay a discounted fee to upgrade now.

That's the truth!

It is quite elusive but keep the faith. You never know. Perhaps as one moves up the ladder in the loyalty program, it is more likely to happen.

I had been upgraded from a run of the ship interior to an outside on my first cruise on RCI. On Celebrity one time we got upgraded from a regular balcony to one of the extra large balcony's on the slope of the ship that had lounge chairs so we could lay out on the balcony and still had room to walk around.

I have been upgraded many times on Holland America , the last 2 cruises on the Veendam I was upgraded to a ocean view , I am a 4 Star Mariner , may be that helps

But one can always hope. The last upgrade we were offered was a discounted upgrade but we didn't take advantage of it.
