Have You Ever Paid to Upgrade?

Our travel agent called us with an offer from HAL to upgrade for a good price.  How many of you ever received such an offer?  Did you take advantage of it?  Would you take advantage if it was a good deal?

On our first cruise combined with hotel stay in Jamaica, we were offered an upgrade room in the hotel by Virgin which we turned down. They wanted about $100 more which we preferred to spend on the Pearl

Isn't the jargon for asking for money on an upgrade an "upsell" today? The days of the real upgrade are almost over it appears, like getting a full size suite for the same price; we did get an upgrade in quality of balcony about a year ago on Princess in that the balcony was twice as large and partly forward facing for no extra charge. Usually for an upgrade nowadays they just move you to a higher priced location on the ship getting the exact cabin size and balcony size.

As far as taking one of these upgrades where we have to pay extra, yes we have did that, at least a half dozen times. We didn't regret it either, but the price wasn't all that much more. In the last year or so however it seems like they have figured out how to charge. We had an offer for a cruise we took about 12 weeks ago to upgrade to a full suite, albeit one of the smaller full suites, but very nice and large no less. Trouble was, for a 15 day cruise they wanted $2,400. extra.

I remember back when the upgrades were given free of charge.

Never have had the chance. However, I'm still relatively new to cruising, so after a dozen or so maybe I will be able to offer insights into upgrades.

At best, the agents get a few more bucks when they upsell. As a sales rep, I understand the art of upselling, only my rule is I have to upgrade the product as well.

I have!!! On my very first cruise we were offered an upgrade to a suite from a balcony room. I don't know what extra we had to pay (less than $100) My husband handled it and surprised me with the upgrade.

We get those offers all the time. Problem is, we need a HC cabin, so the offer is moot.

I have gotten free upgrades, never paid for any. On some cruise lines I get an automatic 3 level in same category upgrade.

I got a downgrade (balcony to ocean view), but they paid me well for it (refunded half the ticket price each). Won't be taking advantage of that offer again, though -- I gotta have my balcony!

We've never been offered an upgrade in all the cruising we've done. I am of the mind that you have to donate an organ or something similar to get on the upgrade offer list... ~sarcastic eye roll~

In any event, we never expect to get them, complimentary or otherwise.

We were offered an upgrade but we turned it down. It was still too expensive for us to be willing to pay for it. It, however, was a good deal and I'm sure someone accepted it.
