Happy National Aviation Day

If it weren't for planes, many of us would never get to the port to go on a cruise!  Kiss a pilot today ... okay don't do that .. you may get bumped off the flight.

National Aviation Day

In 1939 President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed August 19 to be National Aviation Day. The day coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright, who piloted the Wright Flyer. He and his brother Wilbur are given credit for building the world's first successful airplane with aircraft controls that enabled them to steer the plane. Orville Wright made the first flight for 12 seconds and 120 feet around the site of Wright Brothers National Memorial on December 17, 1903. They were not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft but they are the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed wing flight possible. Each year the president may issue a proclamation to: designate August 19 as National Aviation Day; call on government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on the day; and invite people living in the United States to observe the day with appropriate exercises to further stimulate interest in aviation in the United States.

Thanks for the history, did not know there was an Aviation day.

Neither did I or my DH, and he's been in the aviation industry. He even has a private pilot's license... I think that's the pilot I'll kiss.Wink

Our local library promotes many uncommon holidays and recommends books ... Here's a link to the Aviation reads they recommend:

Good reading list. Thanks!

Afraid to answer. Do not want to offend.

When I was a kid I used to go to the library regularly. I was always looking at aviation books (as well as maritime related books). Now I'm in aviation. Never knew until your post that there is an aviation day.

I think it be great if the airlines honored the day with huge discounts on their fares. Happy

Thanks for the post!

LOL - I'm over it ... just didn't want a bunch of people thinking I created a robocall problem for them ... moving on ...Happy

Tying aviation into cruise lines have you seen where Crystal Cruises plans on ordering a plane with a super luxurious interior to be used for round the world flights. Just a plan right now and at over 100,000 dollars a person will be just a dream for me. But the planned interior is fun to look at.

I read on CNN that service is suppose to start next year.
