I saw this post on the forum and am responding to it.
" Was browsing through the Shipmates app pictures and saw that Gloria posted some pictures from her trip on the Rotterdam. Hope she swings by the forum soon to let us know how things are going with her house in Florida and tell us about the cruise."
Yes, I returned from my cruise just as Irma was about to hit The Keys. Instead of going to the airport and flying home to FL, we rented a car and drove to NY where our daughter has a house. Our daughter was not home so we had the place to ourselves. Great, except that the brand new boiler was not delivering heat to the upstairs. It was 45 degrees that night outside. Even with a space heater (which we had given her several years ago) and plenty of blankets, we were still cold all night. We laughed that we couldn't even turn over with all the blankets we had piled on the bed. After a couple of days, the defective part was replaced and we had heat again.
We are not complaining since back home, we had no electricity or water for 8 days. We decided to stay put for that length of time in NY. By the time we arrived home to FL, everything worked but we needed to empty out our refrigerator. At least by then the supermarkets were stocked. I have to add that Avis, Jet Blue and HAL were all very accommodating to our plight.
Our condo unit was in perfect order, we had no intrusion of water at all. The balcony & windows hurricane shutters held up fine. However, the grounds around the condo did not fare as well. Trees were uprooted, a roof over some garages were torn up, A/C units on the roofs of some of our buildings were toppled but not ours. Beautiful new shrubs and flowers were destroyed and a mini tornado lifted water from the pool and sprayed it over one of the buildings. The forest in front of the complex is decimated. The dunes behind the buildings although now brown are starting to green up again. A few storm doors flew off some units. The solar heating panels were torn from a roof and had to be discarded. The damage, however, is less than the deductible on our insurance policy. This may mean an assessment but we will have to see what vegetation comes back. In any case, no one was hurt so we are glad for
that. Thanks for asking.
Briefly, the cruise, Voyage of the Vikings was incredible. We saw so many unusual things. The high point was Cruising Prince Christian Sound among the many huge icebergs, ribbon waterfalls and snow capped fjords.Of course, I did submit a review of my cruise along with my photos but it is not verified so perhaps no one got to read it. It is good to be back up on the site. Hope to see another admiral on the site soon. Gloria
