Do Cruise Ships Serve Too Much Food?

How do you feel about the portion sizes of food served on Board? Are the appetizers big enough, entrees sufficient, dessert portion OK?

For me, they are a good size. If anyone thinks they are too small, remember that you can always get more.

The only times that I thought that the serving sizes were too small were on NCL and that was awhile ago. Usually the serving sizes are fine with me. But, yes, you can always request an additional serving of something. We always requested two appetizers on NCL when we sailed that line. Perhaps the serving sizes are larger now on NCL.

Remember back in the 80's and 90's, the full size portions on each of the 5 courses of dinner ? After dinner you had to hit the Midnight Buffet with all the carved fruit, vegetables and the ice sculptures every night? Back then I was young and could pack away 2 dinners and then still eat at the midnight buffet and not gain an ounce.

Now most cruise lines have cut back on the serving sizes. I'm good with the servings since there are 5 courses they can all be smaller. At this age I'm not eating 2 main courses anymore and now I can put on a few pounds on a cruise if I'm not careful.

I think the smaller portions are good to stop a lot of the food being through away and keeping me from needing to buy larger jeans after a cruise.

Yes, they are too big. For the past few years we have been eating smart and I can only eat about a 4 ounce steak at a sitting. I believe if they downsize the quantity and upsize the quality, things will balance out.

That being said, there is still those who load up at the buffet as if they will never have another meal......Big Smile

I remember the midnight buffets.

Yes, as I get older, I eat less and less. If I am at a buffet, I carefully choose what to put on my plate. Many times we ask for smaller portions of steak or the main entree.

I'm not a big eater, and I find restaurant portions to be way too big. I haven't been on a cruise for a few years. If they cut down on the serving sizes that's fine.

Too much food? Hell no.

As for appetizer sizes if you want 2 appetizers ask. Most ships will also give you 2 entrees if you ask. Food is half the fun of a cruise.

Sometimes after eating a big lunch,I ask the server at dinner to bring me a smaller sized entree. If I just ask to share an entree with my husband, it doesn't happen. They always bring another entree for me, anyway.

I don't think the serving size in the Main dining rooms are too big. For me it is the entire four or five courses that gets to me. So I now order a appetizer and a main course. Seems to work.
