Customs asking where I work

I notice that Customs and Immigrations always asks where I work when I re-enter the US.  I guess it's one of those probing questions to see if they get a "red flag"response.  Don't remember that question coming up at all when I used to travel out of country years ago.  Anyone else always asked where you work when you re-enter your country?

The first question a customs person asked as he was looking at his screen--"What do you teach?" My husband and I looked at each other and wondered just what does Big Brother know about us.  After we told him that we taught at a university, and we must have had a strange expression on our faces, the customs man burst out laughing.  He said that we filled out our forms with a red pen and only people in education use red pens.

I didn't realize you all probed mules. To each his own, I guess.Big Smile

I get asked that all the time (I guess I have a face that only a smuggler could love).

When I tell them, they usually don't believe me and ask follow-up questionsHappy. Usually have to show my creds by the end of it.

When DH and I returned from the Bahamas we were not asked about employment during Customs.

Apparently I look like a "mule" to custom officials since I travel alone so I get to answer the question.

I tell them "why work?' I am retired

If they ask you that, tell them at the strip club, LOL

I have never been asked that question.
