Cruise Ship Veers Toward Homes; ‘Could Have Been Catastrophic’

Hi all: It's our first post. We just launched The Voyage Report, an online newsroom covering travel and transportation. Glad to be a part of this community.

Wanted to let you know we just posted two more clips of the Celebrity Cruises Equinox coming VERY close to homes in Florida. The video has gone viral. Homeowner Bill Todhunter tells us: "This could have been catastrophic. There could have been death involved." VIDEO: http://bit.ly/2n0Eb7x

Have you ever seen a cruise ship come that close to homes? Clearly the homeowners were sincerely frightened. We'd like to open it up for discussion and get your thoughts (interestingly, Bill says he's never been on a cruise but would still go!).

I saw that, it will be interesting to see if anything comes of it>

Homeowners will be given a voucher for 25% off a future cruise.

I watched this a couple of times. If it was my home, yea, I would have raised a stink. Some how the Pilot, Captain and ship Captain all screwed the pooch on that one. Due to the speed and the underwater terrain, I doubt that any serious damage would have been done to the house. Although the sitting area shown would have been toast. Sorta like the last scenes of Speed 2..

And as BAK  a perk for a cruise... but I would hold out for at least 50 %.

Maybe 30%.

I still do not know what they are complaining about........ I have to take a flight or a limo to get to a ship,   they get picked up at her back door.........   That's what I call service !!!!

This reads like you are fishing for tabloid hysteria - no one was hurt, no property damaged - no harm - no foul. Let it go. If this is what the "voyage report" is all about - count me out.

I totally agree.  I saw the video.  At no time did the ship look out of control.  Just got a bit closer than usual.  And listening to the home owner, he sounded like a whiner.  He babbled some nonsense about how someone will loose their job over this.  Good grief, like ItaVero said, no one hurt, nothing damaged - except for maybe the owner soiling his pants!

The guy on the video got his 15 minutes of fame.

No injuries, no damage, no news.

I do, however like the few stories that were linked to your site.

I think if I were the homeowner I might've peed my pants a little when I saw that ship headed toward my house.  By the time the video clip starts it's plain to see that it is turning away from land, but I would like to see footage of it before it started the turn--I think that would have been the scarier part.  The dogs, however, seemed excited at the prospect of thousands of dinner guests Big Smile

John, you should get double stars for mentioning Speed 2!

I, myself, have never been worried about a cruise ship running aground in my yard, I do hedge my bets by living 4.5 hours from the nearest port, so that might have something to do with it.
