Cruising on the Norwegian Epic, is Wi-Fi available throughout the ship and/or do you need to do something special to pick it up on your cell phone?

Yeh you need to do something special.. you need to buy it! and it sucks!  didn't you check any of this out?

Go on line and see what packages are available. unless you bought the cheapest box available, wifi might have been available as part of the cabin package...or call NCL. or your TA...

Expensive so check out your options carefully.

Most ships Wi-fi is very expensive and very slow.   I would say not worth it since you can get free wi-fi in most ports at restaurants when you get a snack, cold drink or lunch.

I agree with JusMe. WiFi on the ships is expensive and usually very slow. We will wait till we get to port.

You are so kind Yankee47 and so appreciate your comments.

Thanks Freddy. Which package did you get? depending on your cabin choice, it could have been free.

I agree with some of the other comments here, in that wi-fi on board is very expensive. Being slow makes for even a greater problem since you are burning up a lot of the time you have paid for just waiting for connects, etc. And for sure, never compose when you are connected. If you don't have your own device and are using the ship's computers, often they won't allow you to compose unless connected. So I use my own lap-top. Another thing, connection quality on the ship varies with locations on the ship and the volume of usage the system is experiencing at a given time, sometimes I take my lap top to near where the ship's internet cafe is located and get much better signals. Long distance phone service charges are even worse.

However, over the last two years we have noticed a significant increase in internet speeds, on both Princess and Regent. Since I stay in touch with the kids and friends using Facebook I like to post pictures I have taken. It used to be posting a picture was almost impossible and if not impossible, very expensive. Nowadays I can post an already composed diatribe as well as include 20 or more pictures in just use a few minutes. Using our Princess perks we receive more than an adequate number of free minutes internet time, on Regent we not only receive unlimited internet but 3 hours of phone time which even my wife can't use much more than a third of. On Princess we have unlimited laundry though but on Regent we are limited to only one small bag per week. Wish we could trade phone time for laundry.

The wifi on NCL is sold either by the byte or by the minute ... either way both options byte and are expensive. The unlimited package is expensive and generally not needed. I bought my wifif a limited package of 300 KB for our last cruise on Breakaway and there was still some left at the end of the week.

Cheers man.

Solved the problem after the first time...leave the cells in the safe until its time to debark.  Don't miss em atall.  Matter of fact sitting around watching people turn colors working at em while on board is entertaining. KENNICOTTS  comment about speeds increasing on certain lines is interesting.  Dovetails with the TV channels available.  All about what kind of equipment the ship/line is willing to pay for.

I kid the managers of the internet cafe and wi-fi system in they have the toughest job on board, at least for the first few days of the voyage. Takes an enormous amount of patience for that job, in addition to being a computer and internet guru.  People lose their tempers so easily when it comes to trying to work with an internet connection, including yours truly. I've seen guys who didn't know squat accompany their wives and as the poor manger is trying to educate them the guy is yelling at the manager telling him that he is rude. LOL
