Carry on preference - wheeled, backpack or bag

The other thread about too many carry on bags made me wonder what most travellers use - a pull behind wheeled carry on, a backpack or perhaps a big beach bag style of carry on. Some of each? What's your preference?

Backpack for DH and tote for me.

DGF will have your backpack for her stuff and if she needs more carry on stuff, then she can carry a tote.

When we get on the ship, I now use a backpack as carry on. Previously used a small wheelie bag, but its a drag when you want to jump to the stairs to avoid crowded elevators.

Always a backpack. I usually bring a Laptop or Microsoft Surface to edit pictures while onboard, and I must say I dont trust the porters to be gentle with my bags, nor do i trust them to properly handle temp sensitive medications.

Usually in my Backpack:

- Surface Pro or Laptop

- Canon DSLR with 2-3 Lenses

- GoPro w/ Selfie stick, and other assorted mounts

- a book

- Bathing Suit

- Insulin, Glucagon, and other medical supplies

- Jungle cover

- crocs.

- Cash.

Other than that, if they lose my luggage in the 100yd trek from the porters to the ship, im not entirely worried about it. I also continue working(answering emails and phone calls) until the muster drill, so I dont have to use as much vacation time.

Small sling backpack and small wheeled for me. Backpack for the wife

Nailed it ! That is pretty well the same story I stick to with the exception of doing emails and calls up to muster. I park my work equipment at home 2 days before cruising and unplug from the work world.

Because of my Union contract, and relatively little amount of time I have been with my employer(5 years) I just finally got a 3rd week of Vacation this year. Most of the work I do remotely (Which is INSANELY little) is answering questions from Contractors, and referring them to other inspectors for on-site inspections while i'm gone.

it allows me to drink while I'm working, AND cut 4 days off of my vacation bid(travel day, embarkation, disembarkation, travel day) which I can then use at a later date!

However, thats where I draw the line. My boss offered to pay for VOOM on my last cruise, and not charge me any vacation time, and I politely told him where he could shove that offer. Big Smile

We use wheeled luggage because they seem to be easier for us to handle, plus my Dad has a heart condition, so anything really beyond that is out of the question. However, we do have carry-ons and things like that: for those we use regular messenger bags or backpacks.

A back pack which I use as my purse and a small tote with toiletries and a change of clothes just in case.
