Hi

Driving from canada to new york Norwegian cruise on November 26.  Looking to stay at inexpensive hotel with free parking for the week.  Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I don’t know about the hotel, but I can tell you this, there is no free parking in NYC.  You can park at the pier for $40 / nite, or there is a parking lot ( Enterprise Parking ) directly across the street, I don’t know their rates.

I have heard that some people stay in NJ and come across the river, and that the hotel allows them to leave their car for the week.  Problem with that is, when you disembark, you have to head back across the river to get your car.

There are less expensive lots near the pier that have online offers for about 1/2 of what the pier charges, but you’ll have to grab a cab ( you might be able to drop off your luggage and leave one person at the pier while you park off site ).

Honestly, I would just park at the pier. The convenience of getting right into your car when you disembark outweighs any inconvenience of saving a few $$$.  You can do self debarkation, walk outside, and get in your car.  You’ll be back on the road by 10:00, maybe 9:00 am

okay, I just checked....the lot across the street is $45/ 24 hours

ICON systems has nearby lots

good luck, enjoy the cruise

Oh, for the hotels,  look up hotels in Fort Lee, and Jersey City New Jersey.  If they show Bogota, Teaneck, Hoboken or Teterboro, they are close too.

Holy Buckets!  $40 a night to park ... I love NY but that's ridiculous ... of course most of our casinos on the strip have now gone to paying to park which is absurd if you are coming to throw money in the casino!

Days are free. They only charge for the nights. Yummy

I have heard of some that also park at a hotel in NJ and they offer a package to allow you to leave the car there but not sure of the rates. We too drive in from Canada coming through Syracuse down I81 and take I80 into NY. We usually get a hotel in Parsippany as the prices are much more reasonable. It is about a 2 hour drive to the port from there. For parking we just love the sheer convenience of parking at the terminal. We cross at the George Washington and first exit is the Henry Hudson and it takes you right to the terminal. Park on the terminal roof and take the elevator to the street to check our bags. When the ship comes back you clear customs, hop in the car and go. No finding a taxi or anything else. Just get off the ship and drive home. In our opinion the price to park at the terminal is well worth it.

Ahhh, Parsippany.  I used to date a girl from there, and my wife’s cousin lives in Morris Plains.   You go right past my exit...Rockaway ( it might say Hibernia ) is where I grew up.   There used to be a Howard Johnson’s right there. Now it’s some other chain motel.  Good diner across the street.  I mention this in case you don’t feel like staying in Parsippany, but want to get out sooner and still be about an hour from Manhattan.

Thank you for your suggestions.  Originally we looked at staying over in Scranton night before but I might look into the other town you had mentioned.  We also found a secure parking garage a couple of blocks away for around 200.00 for the week.

Just be careful. That $200 price may be an online offer.  You reserve in advance, and print out a confirmation which you bring with you to the garage. I don’t recall if I prepaid the fee, but I might have.

enjoy the cruise

Thanks. Might have to consider that for next cruise. For this one the room is already booked and paid for.

Keep in mind that if you park off site you may want to drop the luggage at the terminal before parking and after the cruise you will have to walk the luggage away from the terminal to load it into your car. The porters will not let you load it into your car in front of the terminal.
