Auto cruise line upgrades

So I have seen some people mention here and there about how they have been upgraded by the cruiseline. That has never happened to me, so I'm curious how often it happens (granted I know it depends on how much the cruise is sold).

Have the upgrades been on a big ship, small ship? How many levels have you been upgraded to? Does level of loyalty come into play?

I booked a guarantee inside, and understand that RCCL can wait until the day of sailing to assign my room, but is it worth waiting to see if an upgrade can happen, or should I try and spend what loyalty points on my CC (Which I've never used) for an upgrade?

There is no guarantee of an up grade when you book "Guarantee inside cabin" . The down side to booking a "Guarantee" cabin is that you get what is left over after everyone picks what they want. These tend to be the cabins with bad locations (next to elevator banks, under clubs or kitchens or at the very front of the ship). when I was younger and shorter on funds I would book a "Guarantee" cabin and I did get upgraded a few times from inside to outside. Now I'm picky of what cabn I want so I always book a specific cabin.

If you can sleep through anything, then go for the lowest price, but be willing to not be upset if it has noise from near by.

I have only once taken advantage of an upgrasde and thast was on our first cruise. We had booked an oceanview stateroom through an online agency. About 2 months before sailing the agency contacted us and offered an upgrade. We declined as it was outside our budget but then they said hold on and after a minute on hold offered us an upgrade to a balcony for 75.00 each. We happily took that.

On our last cruise which we booked direct through the NCL we started to receive emails about upgrades about 2 or 3 weeks out with a variety of prices and a variety of upgrades options. We were very happy in our original balcony that we selected a year before sailing do declied but we encountered a group of 5 sisters doing the cruise that took advantage of the upgrade fairy to get one of the 3 bedroom Haven Suites {Awesome accommodations .. absolutely awesome) and they picked that up for a very good price. It varies greatly on how you booked and the cruise itself.


I think my boyfriend would die if that was us! I just don't know if I could wait that long, but know its because it is what they may have available..Fingers crossed I guess!

The closest I ever got was being "upgraded" from a Lido Deck balcony to a lower deck obstructed view with a lifeboat in front of it. (I did get 50% of the fare returned as refundable OBC, but never again!)

This only happened to me once. I had booked an assigned cabin and when we went to check-in we had been upgraded to a higher deck...the cabin was mid-ship as I had prev requested but it wasn't a total upgrade to a balcony or anything.

I managed to find the spot on my profile to mark for upgrades, but with no ability to see if the ship is full (Well no accurate way) I am starting to realize not to hold my breath. I am still debating on using my points... I am looking into a cruise through Alaska so I might hold off and use them on that cruise.
