Anybody use Uber?

Just wondering if any of you guys use Uber and what your experiences have been?

The prices are tempting, but does the risk outweigh the savings?

Here is the one issue we have with Uber or Lyft.  If you are in an accident, that is to say the driver is in an accident, you have no insurance coverage.  Well, you may be covered under the drivers' insurance, but that may only be the state minimum.  It's not classified as a taxi service, but a ride sharing service.  Just like asking a friend for a ride to the airport. We use a bonded car service often.

We also joined ZipCar, which, is not considered a car rental, but a car sharing service.  So, again, if something happens, my insurance won't cover anything, so, we added on theirs. It comes in handy if our car is in the shop, or we need something larger to haul something big.

No never used them. I live in Delaware and we have buses and taxi services but we do not have a subway or trolley system. Most people here have a car or two and would ask a family member for a ride or rent a car before taking a taxi service. However, I do hear about the horror stories with he drivers and even the passengers....I am never in need of a ride at short notice.

Uber had a great deal of trouble getting up and running here in Edmonton. The council created extra by- laws requiring taxi licences for the driver, police checks for the driver and commercial insurance and plates on the vehicle. Much like the taxi companies have. The taxi industry also was forced to clean up their act a bit. So now we have Taxis, Uber,  Tapp car and probably a few others. For me? If I can't park my truck at the venue... I'm not going.....Wink

My husband drove for Uber for a short time (he's a disabled veteran, so he doesn't work) and as long as you're careful, you usually don't have much to worry about. The biggest concern is the insurance in the event of an accident.

Thanks for the responses, guys!!  I think the insurance issue is enough to keep us from using Uber.

Love Uber... love it, love it, love it.

Have used it in FL, MA, PA, and NJ. All experiences have been great.

There are a variety of Uber service levels... from taxi to shared rides to only black cars to SUV etc. Which you go with affects the price.

Interesting. I have never used uber, but I have seen some comments on various reviews (some good some bad).

Only twice when in NOLA. We asked out hotel concierge to flag us a cab. Both times there was instantly a car there and it was not until we were on our way we realized it was not a standard licenced taxi, rather it was an Uber. In hind sight it explained why the driver slipped something to our concierge each time and thanked him. On both occasions we found the driver nice  the ride pleasant and the price good.

But I thought to use UBER you had to have an account with a credit card on file.  You aren't supposed to be able to flag one down, or be able to pay cash.  Here in NY if you were trying to flag down a cab, and an UBER driver pulled over to offer you the ride, he would lose his license.  Even car services aren't supposed to stop. You may call a car service, but they aren't supposed to stop for hails. That's not to say it doesn't happen.

I am not sure how Uber works as that was the first time I had ever used them so cannot really comment on how it is supposed to work. We did pay using a credit card. And we did not flag them down. The hotel called them for us.
