I love to cruise in warm places when it is cold at home!

Explorer of the Seas

January 2020 - 9 Night Southern Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Cruise on Explorer of the Seas

Visiting the A-B-C islands in the Netherlands Antilles

We had a great time with friends who we had dinner with each night in the main dining room with a great waitstaff. Bring extension cords for your room as the outlets are not where you need them. The Netherlands Antilles islands were beautiful.

Carnival Paradise

April 2019 - 5 Night Key West/Havana/Cozumel (Tampa Roundtrip) Cruise on Carnival Paradise

Great experience in Cuba

The trip to Cuba was worth the down-grade of the ship experience and Cozumel is always fun. For this trip it was more about the destinations than the on-board amenities (not many) or food (ho-hum).

Allure of the Seas

January 2019 - 7 Night Eastern Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Cruise on Allure of the Seas

Great Caribbean Cruise to support the hurricane islands' economy

I was happy to support the economy of the islands that are still recovering from the 2017 hurricanes. And the sun and warmth when it was 0 degrees at home didn't hurt either!

January 2017 - 5 Night Western Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip) Cruise on Navigator of the Seas

Great first cruise!

Being first time cruisers we didn't quite know what to expect so plied our friends and relatives with thousands of questions before we left. And it was better than they described! We loved Navigator of the Seas and the 5 day length was perfect. Although the bus tour of Nassau was interesting, the cooking class on a Cozumel beach with an open bar and access to all sorts of water sports was superb. Luis was a terrific chef who led us step by step in making a gourmet meal for ourselves. It was delicious and I can't believe that a non-cook such as myself could do even the chocolate rosettes and dish garnish designs. We also did a Miami bus tour since our plane didn't leave until 12 hours after we docked. The hop-on-hop-off bus tour stored our luggage and took us to the airport-- all for one price.

The advice we are glad we followed was not to get a drink package but to bring a case of bottled water onboard. We don't drink much alcohol so buying it per the drink was okay. The onboard entertainment was terrific too. I laughed so hard with the comedian that I was crying! There was a nice mix of people on board from young to old, from families to class reunions, and even a wedding party. Everyone was friendly and it was fun to learn about their experiences.

Cruise tips

Willemstad, Curacao

I think I liked Curacao best. The bus tour we took to the Curacao liquor factory and the beach was nice. We had lunch at the beach and enjoyed an afternoon there with the white sand and blue waters.

Explorer of the Seas

Explorer of the Seas

Bring an extension cord if you want to have power where you need it. Ask for the waiter Donald in the Main Dining Room.

Oranjestad, Aruba

We had a nice time in Aruba at a wine-tasting which seemed too short. Then we hired a cab to take us around the island. That was nice to see some of the sights.

Kralendijk, Bonaire

We did not do an excursion here. The small "city" was right off the ship and had a marketplace with artisans and shops which was fun to wander through. I contributed to the economy in each port!

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

We walked around Labadee. I would have loved to have wondered through the shops in the Market village but the shop keepers were so aggressive I couldn't walk past them fast enough - even when I saw something I might have wanted to see closer. I could not stand that experience and wish they would realize they are actually chasing people away!

Tampa, Florida

Tampa has an aquarium right next to the pier. We got a half-price discount coming off the ship for entrance AND they stored our luggage for the day. With 12 hours before our flight, we took advantage of the storage and explored Tampa a little bit too.

Cozumel, Mexico

We did the "Taste of Mexico" tour at Discover Mexico Park not through Carnival so we got to make our own chocolate bar, have a private tutorial on tasting tequila (3 kinds), and a taco bar for lunch. Our guide Memo (pronounced Me-moe) was very knowledgeable on the culture and history of Mexico and showed us through the art museum and diaramas of Mayan ruins. He was extremely knowledgeable on tequila and gave us certificates at the end for taking his "class."

Key West, Florida

Lunch was good on the waterfront. Poured rain the rest of the day and got soaked. Don't forget your photo ID as they land on a military base and you need it to get back to the ship.

HAVANA, CUBA

First, take advantage of any on-board ship lectures about Havana and how to prepare. We are so glad to know about the different types of money, no credit cards, and how to use the bathroom which costs. Our guide for a "Taste of Havana", Joan (pronounced Joe-wan) was excellent. He was knowledgeable about the history and took us on foot to the historic sites where he gave us plenty of time to look around. We went to the hotel where Hemingway stayed and to the bar where he invented the Mojito (and tasted one), to the Floridita bar where he invented another drink (tasted it -- was out of this world), and other notable sites. Included lunch at a wonderful restaurant with real bathrooms (important find in Cuba!) and a classic car ride after lunch. We spent from 9 am to 4 pm walking, eating and drinking and riding and the group was still going to go for beer when my husband and I bailed because we wanted to get back to the ship. Excellent, excellent tour!

Order the bottled water (12) case to be delivered to your room for about $5. Or you can use a refillable bottle if you don't mind the tap water.

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

My brother and sister-in-law did the zip-line. They enjoyed it. After that the cruise ship provided a picnic lunch at the beach. Then it was just a day at the beach.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

Loved St. Maarten. Take the "Royal Fun Family Food Tour" and tell Deja we said hi! They take you to a cheese store to taste champagne, cheese, and have a snack of mac and cheese. Delicious! Then on to the French side where we had the most delicious BBQ lunch. and then back to the Dutch side for dessert at "Carousel" where we watched them make gelatto and got two scoops. The Italian owner explained the whole process -- and we got to ride on a carousel! My brother was on the Open top double-decker bus tour and said they never left the Dutch side. It rained a bit and they had to pull its top on. He was jealous that we went around the whole island and saw it all.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

I chose this itinerary to support the economy of the hurricane ravaged islands and I did my part. However the tour we selected "San Juan Cultural Experience" was lame. It was our guide Enrique's first day back in 6 months and the tour was lame. The first stop in the old city he said go explore and see you back in one hour. WHAT? Thought this was a guided tour! Second stop was at a VanderBilt hotel. Again - go explore the beauty of this luxury hotel and be back in 30 minutes. Third stop was 20 minutes out of the city for lunch at a little place that would not have seen much traffic if we weren't hauled there. The food was atrocious. I can't help but think this must be Enrique's in-laws' place or some such. One party on our bus demanded to leave at that point, they were so mad. My brother took the same tour but was on a different bus. His experience was different and they never went to the little town of Luisa for lunch. They got a guided tour of a government building which was beautiful and built with marble from all over the world. They enjoyed their tour. Wish we were on that bus with them.

Allure of the Seas

Allure of the Seas

Check out the drink ticket ads which are posted at a couple of bars (like Boleros) which offers 10 drinks for $79.99. We didn't find the offer until 2 days before leaving. The offer is sharable among family and friends.

Miami, Florida

With 12 hours between when the ship docked back in Miami to our airplane departure we did the Hop On Hop Off bus tour which was run superbly. We hopped off in Little Havana for lunch. Jen was a terrific tour guide! The other guys not as much.

Navigator of the Seas

Navigator of the Seas

We took a sealed package of water bottles on board for water on excursions as well as on the pool deck in the hot sun. We did enjoy a nightcap from the bar as well. Really enjoyed the movies played on the huge screen above the pools. We watched one each night-- and even a Steelers football game!
