May 2014 - Jewel of the Seas to Caribbean - Southern
Let me first start out by saying that this cruise has amazing ports and I would take it again in a heart beat just to go back to those islands. The ship is more upscale than we have ever cruised and was always clean. The Staterooms on the Jewel of the Seas were the nicest we have stayed in and the staff were very nice and accomodating as a whole. Carly B and her cruise director staff were very fun and we enjoyed the events they put on. The shows were also very good! We were impressed with the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers. Our dining room waiter was very nice and even kept us entertained with napkin tricks and brain teasers. The specialty restuarants are amazing and if money was not an issue we would have eaten at them nightly. Also Maria at the Champagne Bar was the best! We went to see her nightly and she always had my Moscotto ready and waiting for me.
Now for the negatives. Besides the specialty restuarants on the ship, the food was just okay. Most dinners in the dining room were decent but nothing spectacular and the selection at lunch and in between meals at Windjamer was alright. There was no 24/7 soft serve which was a huge let down for a few of us. We tried the Seaview Cafe a few times and it was pretty good but mostly fried foods.
The entertainment that there was we enjoyed. Our only complaint was that there was not enough things going on later in the evening. This cruise was filled with older people who went to bed at 10PM and most of the night time activites ended around midnight. The Vortex nightclub was open until about 1 or 2 in the morning but unless it was a themed party there werent that many people in there on a nightly basis. This was a huge contrast to the other cruises we have taken in the past. Most of our group is between 20-25 and the fact that the ship became a ghost town after midnight was a bit disapponting. There were almost 3,000 people on the ship and the first night we were wandering around completely alone it was a bit freaky.
As I said earlier, I would take this cruise again. The ports are amazing! If you are going on shore excursions I highly reccomend the discover scuba in St Croix and St Maarten. The St Lucian costal Cruise to the Pitons was also a very nice day and lastly DO NOT MISS the Tiami 5 star Catamaran cruise in Barbados!
