March 2016 - Norwegian Getaway to Caribbean - Western

Great getaway on the Getaway

Only got 5 days out of 7 but that was United Airlines fault, not Norwegian.

We boarded the Getaway at Ocho Rios thanks to Jet Blue direct flight from Orlando to Montego Bay.

Norwegian Jewel

October 2015 - Norwegian Jewel to Mexico

Mexican Riviera cruise on the Norwegian Jewel

Our first cruise was on the Epic, about twice the size of the Jewel. I was frankly worried that a small ship wouldn't be as much fun as a "mega" ship. I'm happy to say I was wrong. We had a great time. I didn't hear any complaints from our "kids" (all in their 20's) who we invited to join us.  The Jewel has the specialty restaurants, a casino, and plenty of entertainment options. If you are bored on an NCL cruise, your bar might be set unreasonably high.

Our friend were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, and NCL made it special by providing a meeting room for us to kick off the cruise, and an officer of the ship officiated the renewal of the vows. It was a memorable way to celebrate a milestone event like this, with friends and family.

Norwegian Epic

March 2014 - Norwegian Epic to Caribbean - Western

Best Vacation Ever!

We sailed aboard the Epic for a 7 day Western Carribean cruise, visiting Ocho Rios, Cozumel, and Costa Maya. This was our first cruise experience. We enjoyed it so much, we are planning another NCL cruise next year.

The crew of the Epic are so friendly, nice, and accomodating we felt like VIP's. We upgraded to a large balcony on deck 12. We were glad we upgraded because the balcony is quite large, and the views are worth the extra $$'s. The cabin has plenty of room to store luggage and clothes, and we found it to be quite comfortable. There were three "at sea" days and the Epic provided plenty of options for entertainment. Besides the huge pool and water slide complex, there was bingo, Deal or No Deal, trivia, beer tasting, wine tasting, martini tasting, name that song, a casino, blackjack and Texas Hold em tournaments, plus plenty of shows and dining options. There were so many options it was hard to decide which to choose from. Yes, some or most of these require a fee but so what? We had lots of fun playing games and enjoying adult beverages while doing so. The Epic offers several "specialty dining" restaurants so we purchased the Specialty Dining package and ate at a different specialty restaurant every night. My favorites were Cagney's Steakhouse and the Teppan Yaki. Where else can you get a full course, QUALITY steak dinner for $30? Answer is: nowhere. I had a 16 oz ribeye that was just fantastic. My wife had the 8 oz Filet Mignon and likewise enjoyed it.  I've read some complaints about the buffets. I ate at the buffett for breakfast, lunch, and snacks...and honestly found the buffet food to be very tasty and well presented. If we had just stayed with the buffet for dinner, I'm sure it would have been fine.

One tip to make your cruise more enjoyable: you can purchase a case of water for $3.99 and check it with your luggage. The ship sells bottled water for $2.50 a bottle....so if you want to save some money...this is a good way to do it. Same with soda...you can bring a case on board and save the soda package cost. We finished our case of water by the last day of our cruise so it was money well spent.

All in all, NCL cruise aboard the Epic was a great vacation, and we can't wait to do it again.

Surferlou's Tips

Norwegian Getaway Norwegian Getaway - Make sure you bring a pair of closed toe shoes if you or your children plan to run the Ropes course. Flip flops, sandals, or even TEVA water-shoes (as I had) will not cut it on the Ropes course. Luckily, I had a pair of running shoes so I went back to my cabin, put them on, and had a blast!
Norwegian Jewel Norwegian Jewel - There is always something going on. Make sure to check out the "Freestyle Daily" newsletter with list of events and times for the next day.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - The excursion to Los Arcos only took about an hour. From the port, take a water taxi to "gringo beach" and choose a beach front restaurant to get some cold beers and tasty food.
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - We visited "old town" Puerto Vallarta, and a tequila distillery. Beautiful city with lots of history.
San Pedro (Los Angeles), California - There really isn't much to do and/or see in San Pedro, frankly most of the neighborhoods nearby aren't places you would want to be after dark.
Mazatlan, Mexico - I was frankly disappointed. Mazatlan is a large city, and parts of it are not very nice.
Miami, Florida - We encountered a taxi driver who tried to sell us on the lie that the rental car shuttle from National doesn't pick up at the cruise terminal. He said he'd give us a discount at $40 per person to the airport. We politely declined. It almost got out of hand when he took my wifes suitcase. Grrrr!
Norwegian Jewel Norwegian Jewel - Sign up for the pub crawl. It's a great way to make some new friends and sample some adult beverages (in a short amount of time) be prepared for a fun time!
Cozumel, Mexico - Book a day at the all inclusive beach resort Nachi Cocom. You will get all the drinks you want, and a meal. You also get crystal clear water to swim and snorkel in, a palapa with plenty of shade, a pool if you'd prefer that over the ocean, and an overall relaxing experience compared to the port.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica - Tubing down the White River is a blast! Be careful about wandering around Ocho Rios solo, you may wind up a target for thieves. Use the buddy system and stay near crowds.
Norwegian Epic Norwegian Epic - The poolside buffet is open early so you can make a breakfast plate and sit outside and enjoy the ocean view while eating your breakfast.
