Celebrity Reflection

November 2015 - Celebrity Reflection to Caribbean - Eastern

I am a cruiseaholic (elite member)

I couldn't wait to take the Reflection after reading so many positive comments.  It is a very nice ship.  It is more contemporary style and I prefer the more posh style.  Our stateroom (9219) was a bit smaller than I expected but the location was perfect.  The game room didn't have any games except for electronic games which did not work for the first three days.  The overall food experience was good but not perfect.  The main dining room chairs are the barrel style which I find very uncomfortable because you can't really lean back.  There were only three professional entertainers, the remainder being the crew singers and dancers.  I expected more.  There were no small singing groups like I have seen on other Celebrity cruises.  There were no string groups performing around the ship like on other Celebrity cruises.  I did not care for the gelato that can be purchased.  My husband wanted to purchase some snacks and we went to the gift shop where a standard container of Pringles was $5.99 each.  We didn't buy them, way too over priced.  I expect to pay more, but not that much more.  Boarding was fast and easy.  Service and stateroom staff were very good.  Getting off the ship took longer than expected.  We didn't see very many officers.  The shore excursion that we took in San Juan was not worth the cost.  It was a old and new tour that went to the fort where we were told we would have an hour.  We only got about 40 minutes because it was getting dark.  The tour was supposed to start at 3:30, but didn't start until 4:15.  The remainder of the tour was in the dark where many things could not even be seen.  For example, we were taken to the driver's favorite beach.  Only, we couldn't even see a beach or water.  Waste of money.  We did take the St. John's island tour from St. Thomas and very much enjoyed.  It was well worth the money.  There was a 5% fee to get cash in the casino.  We lost our usual amount but enjoyed doing it.  I felt there was not enough things to do on the ship, like Trivia games.  Overall, it was a good cruise.

Celebrity Summit

September 2013 - Celebrity Summit to Canada, New England, New York

Old and tired

We found this ship to be very old and in need of many updates.  There were many places of peeling paint and stained grout.  The plug on the desk was broken.  The ship had an outbreak of an intestinal flu where there was about 50% of the passengers sick, including my husband.  They announced on ship that they would be sending out a credit for the inconvenience.  My husband was in bed for three days.  When we went to the medical offices, we waited for an hour in line just to see the nurse.  That was about the sickest my husband has been.  Well, we never received a credit.  I called six months later and then they sent out a credit for $100 for a future cruise.  That sure didn't make up for three days in bed and me sitting with him.  I couldn't go on shore excursions while he was sick in bed.

Then, they came in the room and removed the throw pillows, the bed skirt, and the bed scarf and comforter.  The room looked very sad with all of that gone.  They said they did that so everything could be cleaned and would be put back in time for the next cruise.   That entire experience really put a damper on our trip.  The buffet was changed where no one could serve themselves even the coffee, so it made waiting a long time the usual.  Even salt and pepper had to be put on for you in the dining room, which wasn't always a fast process.  The only positive that came out of that trip was that the ports were very interesting.

The single most worst thing was that the toilets never had any water in them.  It required you to clean the toilet yourself after every use... and that was in the public bathrooms as well as our cabin bathroom.  The toilet paper was so rough that I went out at one of the ports and purchased my own.  When you have an intestinal flu you have to have something that doesn't hurt with use.

We are elite members on Celebrity so we are not new to cruising.  I certainly will never again take a cruise on this ship, the Summit.  It needs to be retired.

Celebrity Summit

September 2013 - Celebrity Summit to Canada, New England, New York

Not happy.

I loved the itinerary on this cruise.  We are elite members, so we have been on many different Celebrity ships as well as other cruise lines.  This was the first cruise that I have been totally disappointed.  The first issue was the amount or the lack of water in the toilets.  We had to brush the toilet each time we used it because there was so little water.  That grossed us out.  The grout in the bathroom was very yellowed and looked dirty.  There was intestinal flu which affected 300 passengers and the crew.  My husband was one of them.  He was in bed for three days.  The nurse gave him some pills to stop the problems, however, the line of sick people had us wait for an hour.  So, both of us actually lost three days of the cruise.  The ship said they would offer us a credit for a future cruise.  Well, we never heard from them, so I had to write several letters before they sent us a letter offering $100 to be used on a future cruise (not enough to make up for three days) and the letter stated that it had to be used within six months.  Well, I sure didn't plan on taking another cruise that soon so it was a total waste.  Our room steward removed the bedspread and bed skirt, and the tossed pillows.  They said it was so they could clean them, but only the skirt was replaced on the second last day of our trip and it was extremely wrinkled.  There were many sections of railings where the finish had worn off and it was not repaired including on the promenade and our room.  There were a lot of maintenance issues.   I don't believe our room was ever vacuumed.  This is an old ship that needs a complete makeover.  The food was good, nothing to complain about except that because of the flu outbreak, the servers removed everything from all the dining tables.  If you wanted salt and pepper, you had to ask and the waiter put it on your food.  In the buffet area, if you wanted salt or pepper you had to ask and they would hand you packets.  You had to wait in line to get a beverage because the crew person would fill the glass and hand it to you.  There was only one person dispensing the coffee and the cold drinks.  Nothing in the buffet could be reached by the public.  Each item had to be served to you which made getting a meal a much longer process. The entertainment was fine except that the band couldn't play one night because they were all sick.  The common areas of the ship were fine.  I will never go on this ship again.  In fact, we decided to go to the eastern Caribbean in Jan., 2015 and ended up taking a Princess cruise because the only choice on Celebrity was on the Summit.  When I tried to contact the cruise line about the issues, I was told that I should have complained while I was on the ship and not after we left the ship.  I even took pictures of the various areas, but no one ever contacted us and it seemed like they just didn't care.  To be honest, I was afraid of the lady who was our room steward.  She was older and had a very strong personality.   We missed three of the stops because of my husband's flu.  I even went off the ship alone to purchase a better quality bathroom tissue.  What was provided by the ship was very rough and caused my husband more irritation.  We did really like the itinerary, except that we missed a couple of ports because my husband was too ill.
