April 2015 - 15 Night Panama Canal Westbound (Ft. Lauderdale To San Diego) Cruise on Legend of the Seas
Not the Greatest
The highlight was the Canal. It was truly a monumental undertaking and should be appreciated by all. The food aboard the Legend was good. The bar service was horrible. At times it took more than 20 minutes to get a drink. It's a shame that RCL charges an automatic 18% gratuity on bar drinks. I always thought tipping was for good service. The ship has seen it's better days and lacks the activities to keep one interested during sea days. It was also evident that RCL has cut back on amenities like stationery, pens, robes, room service menus and toiletries in the cabins. The entertainment was OK, not exceptional. Making dinner reservation for "My Time" dining was a chore. I had to listen to 10 reasons why I couldn't have a requested time before an alternative was suggested. Excursions through RCL were pricey for what you get but, the guides and transport are right there as you leave the ship. While excursions booked through United are cheaper you're faced with a hike and vague instructions to hook up with the tour. If the walk is not an issue it is better not to book anything in advance. Practically every kind of excursion is available from reliable independent operators at the port for significantly less money.
For years we have cruised almost exclusively with RCL and were planning to book next years cruise while on board. However, we have decided to sample a different cruise line as a result of this experience.
