Cruise Glacier Bay
The ship cruises Glacier Bay. You do not get off the ship. I mention this because some cruisers thought the ship docked somewhere along the way. Glacier Bay is beautiful and you see numerous glaciers and ice fields. You will want to be on an open deck so make sure you take a warm jacket, hat and lightweight gloves. At the bigger glaciers the ship will stay in place but turn so each side of the ship can see the glacier.
I highly recommend the White Pass Rail and bus tour through Chilkoot Tours. We were picked up promptly on the pier by our driver, Mike Guida, and taken to the train. Our small group of 13 had the last car on the train and it was great. While we travelled on the train our bus driver drove to Fraser, British Columbia to meet us at the end of the line. We could walk around the train and go out onto the platforms to observe and take pictures. One of the staff provided commentary along the way. Very interesting and stunning views along the way. Once in Fraser, BC we got onto our small bus and were taken through the Yukon & Alaska. We made numerous stops to enjoy the scenery and take pictures. We made stops that a bigger bus could not have made due to its size. Our driver, Mike, is extremely knowledgeable about Alaska's history and the areas we travelled. He made this excursion very enjoyable. We stopped at Carcross where there were shops and bathrooms. When we exited the bus the delicious smells from the General Store called us inside, where we purchased ice cream in homemade waffle cones. Yum! We had a bbq lunch (included in excursion price) at Caribou Crossing. The food was good. There are a few shops here, as well as a mushers sled camp. We held 9 week old Alaskan Huskies! Husky drawn sled rides are also available for $20 pp.
We went on a whale and wildlife excursion through Princess and it was outstanding. It helped the temperatures were in the mid 80's and the sun was out all day. We were picked up on time and took a short ride to Allen Marine, where we boarded the American Eagle catamaran. There is inside seating and areas outside to stand. There are bathrooms on board, as well as snacks for purchase. There was a naturalist on board and she pointed out things of interest along the way. We saw glaciers, porpoises, sea lions, birds, and several whales. We highly recommend this excursion.
We did not book an excursion but walked around town. We enjoyed Creek Street which had shops along the creek. We enjoyed watching the salmon and seals in the creek.
