Pride of America

May 2017 - Pride of America to Hawaii

Hawaii is magical

The best part of this cruise for me was the Big Island. Volcano National Park was amazing and had active lava flow while we were there. Kona was incredible. Sea turtles were everywhere while driving and stopping on the side of the road to explore the black lava coast.  Please know that when you get to Kona you will need to be tendered into port so allow extra time. My advice is to get off early and walk over to Lava Java for breakfast. Great food at an open air, on the coast restaurant with a live musician playing a Ukolele. Then head over to Fun in the Sun Rentalz and rent mopeds to cruise Kona. It's pretty inexpensive and great service and they offer military discounts. You can also rent snorkel gear here too for $5. Then moped over to Kahalu'u Beach Park for some excellent snorkeling... for free. My son had curious sea turtles swimming right up to him.

The cruise ship itself was fine. It's basically a floating hotel. You don't really spend much time aboard. There was one night that we went to a magic show and it was pretty good. The musicians were cruise ship standard. The bartenders at the Waikiki Bar are pretty entertaining and fun. If you are a smoker, you will get to know them well as this is the only place you can smoke aboard. If you are heading to Hawaii on the Pride of America, say hello to Marla from Connecticut and Dave from Hawaii at the Waikiki Bar.

Norwegian Breakaway

September 2016 - Norwegian Breakaway to Bermuda

Bermuda

The only reason this vacation gets 4 stars is because of the constant cloud of smoke inside or outside the ship. The Breakaway has far too many smoking areas, even outside. if you want to enjoy a drink on the waterfront, just know you will leave there smelling like an ashtray and feeling like you just smoked a pack of cigarettes.

However, that being said, this vacation was one of the best I have taken. Rock of Ages was such a fun show!  If you are a hair band loving 80's enthusiast, you will love this show. Wine Lovers:The Musical was super cute. You "taste" 6 different wines during your hour long show, needless to say, my mom and I left feeling great! The food is fantastic at that show and the wines were ok. It is educational too if you want to learn about wines. The food all over the ship is tasty. We ate at these specialty restaurants: Tepanyaki- standard hibachi restaurant. Dilicious. Moderno- standard Brazilian steakhouse. Get ready to overeat. Ocean Blue-upscale seafood restaurant. They didn't have crayons for my niece to draw to pass the time, they lend kids iPads at the restaurant!  The standard restaurants The Cafe, Savor, Taste, etc- all had fantastic service and just as dilicious food.

Bermuda is an island I never really gave much thought to going to. After being there three days, I'm already thinking about going back!  It's clean, it's friendly and it's historic. Everything I look for in a vaca. A few highlights of our trip, 1- the crystal caves. Gorgeous. Don't be afraid of the steps, both my parents did it without much difficulty. The guides were knowledgeable and funny. If you are eating lunch at their cafe, get the fish sandwich!  You won't regret it. 2- the Bermuda Maritime museum- if you like history, don't miss this. The shipwreck area was impressive and the commissioners mansion- beautiful. The architecture alone reminds me of a southern creole plantation. They have turned this building into a museum and its awesome. The mural on the back staircase is artwork by a local artist. Don't miss this!  The artist has a great sense of humor as he painted Bermuda's history. 3-The Frog and The Onion Pub- if you like craft beers, go in and get their beer flight. Their porter is fantastic!  4-Calico Jacks- this is a floating pirate ship bar where you can walk the plank. So fun!  It's convenient as it's right in the Royal Naval Dockyard. My mom says that they make awesome piña coladas. 5-Warwick Beach- everyone says to go to horshoe bay to the beach, DONT. Go to Warwick Beach. The sand is pink, the water is a gorgeous crystal clear aqua and walk right in warm. There are plenty of bluffs to explore and small bays to wade in and snorkel, if you bring your own snorkel. This beach was quiet, not over run by tourist. Hands down, the most beautiful beach I have ever been to in my life. 6- Restless Native Catamaran- I loved this snorkel adventure. We went cliff jumping, explored sea caves on kayak, paddle boarded on the bay, walked the beach for sea glass and of course enjoyed the complimentary rum swizzles. The crew was knowledgeable about local folklore, history and economy. Ask locals about the housing market in Bermuda. I love how they limit celebrities so they can keep a small town feel to the island.

Overall, this was a great vacation coordinated by an awesome representative. Thank you Christina Costello for getting us the best deals on the ship and in exploring Bermuda!

Cruiser65184240's Tips

Hilo, Hawaii - Again, discount Hawaii car rental and Jeep on over to Volcano National Park. Get the Gypsy guide app for the Big Island and it will direct you to all the must see areas. I suggest going to the Punaluu Beach Park first to see the black sand and sea turtles and then make your way to the Volcanos.
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Lava java for breakfast. Rent mopeds from Fun in the Sun Rentalz. Get snorkel equipment there too. Head over to Kahalu'u Beach _ark for some great free snorkeling!
Honolulu, Oahu - I love Waikiki. Go to the Hula Girl Grill at the Outrigger at sunset for dinner. You will not be disappointed.
Kahului, Maui - Don't do an excursion from the ship for the Road to Hana. Go to discount Hawaii car rental online and rent yourself a Jeep Wrangler and download the Gypsy Guide Road to Hanna app. It's a guided tour through the app and it's awesome. Just make sure you bring a blue tooth speaker because you can't plug your phone into the car unless you have an aux jack (IPhone 7 & 7 plus, you need a speaker)
Nawiliwili, Kauai - Waimea Canyon in the early morning was breath taking! It truly is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Shipwreck beach was the perfect place to finish our vacation. If you go when the king tides are there, where a one piece, clothing is not optional but the current and tide pull of the ocean doesn't know that! I was in the water for about 15 minutes before I realized nature was winning and wanted my bathing suit bottoms as a trophy.
Pride of America Pride of America - Remember, you will need to get a tender ticket for a time to get off the ship in Kona. Get an early time so you can maximize your time in Kona. Go to Kona Brewing Company for lunch. The pizza is delicious! The beer is pretty ok too. ;)
