Carnival Liberty

November 2015 - Carnival Liberty to Caribbean - Southern

Budget cruise - you get what you pay for

PROS

* food at dinner was consistently good

* excellent cruise excursions

* very efficient getting on and off the boat in port

* balcony stateroom - would never choose another style stateroom

* smaller food stations were great - Guys! burger joint, BlueIguana cantina, the deli

* great Friday night show in the Venetian - gloabl theme, fantastic singing, dancing, costumes, etc. A real treat!

* adult comedy shows. A great roster of talent.

* room attendant was fantastic

CONS

* Breakfast dining room menu limited, very basic

* Buffet food quality pretty awful (other than salad, which was very basic but fresh). Main courses, sides, and desserts all were not tasty, and we tried a large variety

* Limited selection of on-board activities, especially if you don't want to spend money in the casino or hang out on the Lido pool deck

* ridiculous pricing for spa services and for cocktails and beer

* overall atmosphere of selling - in the shops, at the casino, the overpriced photos, the acupuncture seminars to get you to sign up, etc.

* Only one shop with clothing, which had  a paltry selection and many sizes missing of the few items they carried

Book a late afternoon flight and take a shore excursion on the way home if you can. A great way to end the trip, and Carnival will have your luggage waiting for you at the airport.

AndieplusLal's Tips

Bridgetown, Barbados - If you're an adventurer at heart, take the Harrison's Cave eco-adventure port excursion. Best organized activity my husband and I have ever done.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas - This tip is about St. John (we had read about bustling St. Thomas and decided to avoid it). St. John is indeed beautiful, but our island tour was a little one note and we saw so many beautiful islands during the cruise that St, John didn't stand out by the end of the trip.
Philipsburg, St. Maarten - Beautiful island, well developed. We greatly enjoyed both the Dutch and French side. Rent a car (they're cheap here) and go to Loterie Farm on the Pic du Paradis road. They have a fabulous pool with cabanas, a bar and restaurant, and best of all zip lining for less than half the cost of a port excursion. There's a beginner's course with 11 zips and just as many obstacle lines that we did, and an amazing set of lines that sail you high above the tree tops. Go! Give yourself plenty of time to get back to the boat. The island is tiny but traffic is terrible. Recommend that take the "long" route back to the cruise port - you'll avoid the primary urban areas of both Phillipsburg and Marigot, AND the one main road connecting them.
Castries, St. Lucia - Now THIS was the most beautiful island we saw of all 6. Lush forests, the Pitons, banana plantations, etc. However, the road from the port in Castries to Soufriere, the area where many of the sites are, is 26 miles but takes a solid 90 minutes and is terrifying. Most of the route is through mountains with drop offs and inconsistent barriers. Yikes! We rented a personal car and really, really wished we had taken a port excursion. The drive-in volcano and the Diamond Waterfall/botanical gardens were both great. One other reason to take an excursion - St. Lucia is the poorest island of all those on this cruise's itinerary, and we had more than one incident during the day where we felt quite unsafe (and we're no country bumpkins).
San Juan, Puerto Rico - Old town was beautiful. Bacardi tour is a bucket list thing for many (us included), but we've been on much better brewery and distillery tours. Also, our Bacardi excursion at the end of the cruise went to Old Town first, and none of the shops were open. A total letdown.
Carnival Liberty Carnival Liberty - Buy a case of bottled water after you board! It'll be delivered to your room ~$3 for 12, instead of $1.25 for a small bottle. All the duty-free shopping areas in the ports are interchangeable, pick any day to do that kind of shopping, and then get out and see the islands or do a shore excursion!
