Empress of the Seas

September 2016 - Empress of the Seas to Caribbean - Western

Small Ship, Great Service

The Empress of the Seas is the smallest ship in Royal Caribbeans fleet.  That has advantages and disadvantages.  The advantages include a superb amount of service by every crew member on board, everything is closer, no need for reservations on my time dining, the lines getting on and off the ship are shorter, shows are easier to get to with short or no lines even to the last minute.  Disadvantages are: the staterooms are tiny and poorly laid out (no dressers either), a smaller variety of things to do, the food is subject to some difficulty on the my time dining (over cooked, not as described, etc.)  One disappointment was that solo traveler events were just notices to meet 15 minutes before some other activity where all the other passengers were coming to so there was no good way to meet other solo travelers (in an organized fashion.)

If you adjust for the price of the voyage, this ship is a great value.  On a straight comparison, it is good but not outstanding.

Carnival Legend

November 2013 - Carnival Legend to Caribbean - Western

You get what you pay for

The public area motif on the Legend is not elegant (read tacky).  Carnival spends a great deal of effort trying to extract additional funds from you.  The pre-paid gratuities make you feel uncomfortable on the last day when your servers and stewards are looking for additional tips.  Service in the public area consists of you going up to the bar to get your drink with automatic gratuity for you being your own bar server.  The food on the Lido deck can only be called available (as opposed to say good).  Our dining room staff was very nice; the dining room meals were good, but not anything special.  The shows were mediocre to poor.  Cabin was ok, but does not reflect today’s reality of multiple devices to plug and charge (phones, cameras, tablets, notebooks, etc.) because there is only ONE 120v outlet in the cabin that is unusable (the one in the bath is high and inconvenient.)  If you are a CPA user, bring your own extension cord because there are no plugs on the side where the beds are.  This also means that you have to create an unsafe tripping hazard.  Our cabin steward was reduced to taping the cord down with masking tape to reduce the risk of tripping to us.  The stewards are aware of the problem but Carnival gives them no options or help in resolving the issue.  Not sure if any other line is any better.

55plusCruiser's Tips

Carnival Legend Carnival Legend - Best tip: Book elsewhere. Second tip: use Cruises Only excursions. Better that the ships excursion and cheaper. We also used other third party operators and that was not a happy result.
