Carnival Triumph

Carnival Triumph

Sail date:

I took the 6/29 5-Night Canada/New England cruise on the Triumph with my parents who had never been on a cruise before. Overall, it was a nice vacation, but the Triumph needs some improvements in many areas. This was definitely a smoking ship! I am a smoker myself, but I could not believe that smoking was allowed in just about anyplace you go, except for the dining room. Non-smokers, bring a mask. The food was excellent in the dining room. Our waiter was always pleasant and attending to our every need. My only complaint was that we had to wait every night for dinner. They were always late opening the doors and when we were finally allowed in, our table was never set. They finished setting the tables while we were all seated. Very tacky! As for the South Beach Club for those who prefer a buffet, well I only ate there for lunch and breakfast. I have to say that was the smallest buffet I had ever seen. Although the NY Deli and the Pizzeria were great, the Grand Buffet itself was not so grand. There wasn't much to choose from and my worse experience there, other than the fact that the place was "dirty," was that the staff didn't keep on top of things. I had breakfast there the second to last morning and I had cereal with spoiled milk! The shows we saw where all spectacular and the cruise director, "Corey the birdman," was awesome. This was the only reason I gave this ship 3 stars. One of the things I would like to point out is that the luggage porters, who are outside the terminal to take your luggage, do not care what happens to them as long as they do their job and get it on the ship. My parents' two pieces of luggage came back to us on the ship broken and ripped. I was extremely furious about this because I wanted my parents to have a nice first cruise like I had on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas and the first moments for them were not too good. I had to drag both pieces of luggage all around the ship and bring it to the Purser's desk to complain about it and I was not going to leave until they either fixed it or paid for a new set. They say that the porters do not work for the cruise line and they are not responsible for any damages but if passengers are not given the option of bringing their own luggage on board and must give it to the porters, then each cruise line should be responsible for damages. Well, I finally got them to agree to fix it. It looked like they glued it together with liquid plastic or something but it did the job. The ship looks like it needs a lot of repairs and cleaning. Considering this ship was built in 1999, I couldn't understand why it was so dirty other than they have cleaning staff that does not clean!Overall, it was a decent cruise for the price you pay. Carnival is not as pricey as some of the other ones.RC, NY

Sail date:

This was a 5 day cruise from Tampa. The ship (especially the staterooms), needs to be renovated. The layout of the ship was terrible and very confusing for a mid-sized ship. I was disappointed with the menu choices. The lobster was terrible. The daily announcements during dinner were very annoying, as were the dancing waiters. The service of the waiters and assistants were terrific. The pizza was excellent. The breakfast buffet was average with only white bread for toast or bagels. Looked more like a school cafeteria. Things seems to be done very sloppy. Always men in overalls during the day working in areas where guests were gathered. Dehumidifiers were always plugged in at the Funnel Bar and Grille, as well as on the areas outside of the restaurants. Workers would start to stack the lounge chairs at the aft pool area in the middle of the afternoon as guests would vacate them. Ice would ony be put in staterooms once in the morning and once in the evening. No water pitcher was provided. One nice touch, however, was the terrycloth robes. There were always laundry carts outside in the hallways. Lido deck was closed one night for a crew party and again on the last night for cleaning. Empty cans of beer could be seen on the decks in the early morning left from the night before. If you just want to kick back, party and drink and the little extras don't mean a lot, then you will enjoy this ship.
